I recommend this to any person seriously into bible studying or student.

Finally found a Catholic "Total" Bible Commentary...been looking for one for years until this one was finally suggested to me. I owe that person a debt of gratitude if I can ever trace back to where this advice was given to me. Wish it were available in e format but it is about the size of my printed dictionary, larger than my NAB Catholic Study Bible when stuffing it into a bag it seems but not that much larger and thicker but it is somewhat...
I recommend this to any person seriously into bible studying or student.

So far, I find this Biblical Commentary very helpful with the Course I'm studying. It is a wonderful reference book but not one you begin on the first page and read through! It's scholarly and is laid out very satisfactorily.

A very interesting and helpful thick book, very complete and easy to use: practical but really encyclopedial (including more peripheral issues: Qumran, Apocrypha, geography, etc), erudite but sufficiently freed from any complication derived from exegetical theories and reconstructions.

Curiouser and curiouser!?

This was not a great buy. I love the coloring books, love vintage, love Alice in Woderland so I thought this would be a great buy, I was wrong. Had I paid closer attention and read more reviews, I would have skipped this one. The black shading appears smudged in some pictures and in some, the ink is really off. The repeat patterns are off enough to bug me and some appear blurry. Do as another reviewer has stated, look inside. This is rated at 4 1/2 stars, maybe I just received a "bad" book?

Love the artistic rendition of the characters

I love the artwork in this book. It does have a lot of black shading already on the images and some may not like that so I recommend that you use the "look inside" feature before ordering. These are more artistic rendition of the characters not really cutesy versions. And many of the images are repeat patterns or border prints. Arrived on time and in great condition.

This is a great coloring book if your are wanting vintage images of Alice in Wonderland. I bought this for my sister in law for Christmas who is a huge Alice in Wonderland fan. She was thrilled with it, I can't wait until the newer ones come out and I can get those for her as well. Very pleased with our purchase!

When Terrence Real was studying to be a therapist, he accepted the notion that women suffered depression at rates several times that of men. Now he believes that conventional wisdom is wrong, that there has been a great cultural cover-up of depression in men. Real is convinced of the existence of a mental illness that is passed from fathers to sons in the form of rage, workaholism, distanced relationships from loved ones, and self-destructive behaviors ranging from stupid choices at work and in love to drug and alcohol abuse. Hidden male depression is the focus of this clear, compelling book by a Massachusetts family psychotherapist who specializes in working with dysfunctional men. Because our culture socializes boys to mask feelings of vulnerability, he says, they bury deep within themselves damaging childhood trauma and its ensuing depressive effects when they become men. This strongly reasoned study starts out with an illustration of the "toxic legacy" that is passed, often for generations, from father to son, with each chapter adding another piece to the complex face. The lucid exposition of ideas is made more vivid through dramatizing. Real uses "composite" cases, so no actual person is depicted except the author himself. One of the most arresting aspects of the book is the autobiographical thread that he weaves throughout. Real's central concern is what he calls covert depression, a pain-filled, inchoate state that may or may not eventually erupt into overt depression. The book is wise beyond its stated scope: in setting up a model for the nature, etiology and treatment of male depression, Real ends up offering-with some gender variants-an almost universal paradigm. Real, a psychologist with 20 years of experience treating men and their families, begins with a poignant scene of his father starting to open up and share the pain of his life. From there, Real unravels the buried feelings men have and how these feelings can lead to estrangement from self and family. The wounded boy grows to be a wounding man, inflicting on those closest to him the very distresses he refuses to acknowledge in himself. Real discusses the relation of depression to addictive behaviors, not only drug or alcohol abuse but also workaholism, gambling, and other compulsions. The cure is in confronting the addictive defenses and allowing the hidden pain to emerge. Throughout, Real gives examples of men who discover cruel, shocking traumas from childhood and their adult depression by undergoing guided imagery, talking in a group of similarly depressed men, or discussing the trauma in family counseling. THE only book you need

When I say I suffered in my depression I should say "we" because I dragged a lot of people down with me. I did therapy, read books, took medications. This book helped me, I believe, more than any other single thing that I did.
Mr. Real writes from experience and with knowledge from both sides of the couch. As he composites out and recreates therapy sessions, you, as a depressed man, should see yourself. You can see where you've been and get a preview of where you're going.
Each chapter ends on an upbeat. It does not end on a sappy upbeat. This is no Stuart Smalley book, no pop psychology here. It is a real upbeat, real hope on a deep level. I actually copied paragraphs from this text onto my own paper and carried them along with me.
It takes courage not to be depressed. This book makes this clear. It also makes it abundantly clear that it can be done.

Will open your eyes to a world you never knew existed

This is a well written book about male depression, filled with case studies that the author has overseen throughout his years as a psychotherapist. The style of prose is easy to read and the book avoids technical jargon.
A distinction is made between covert (or hidden) depression and overt depression - the type which is plain for the world to see. Covert depression in many cases is hidden from the victim himself. The author suggests a strong link between covert depression and addictive behavior.
Although the book was very educational, it left me with an overwhelming feeling of sadness. Case after case after case of abuse, violence, despair and hate leaves the reader with a profound sorrow and a feeling that the world is a terrible place.
Male depression is a "legacy" in the sense that it can be passed down through the generations. In many cases, a father is not able to come to grips with his own psychological afflictions and in turn these manifest themselves in the child when he grows up to be a man.
Male depression can also spring from cultural expectations. Men try to conform to the stereotype of "strong, silent". If a man is an alcoholic or addicted gambler, these are conditions that are seen as curable. However, if a man chooses to discuss his emotions or behaves in a manner which might be considered as feminine, then he is avoided like a leper and socially ostracized.
The book concludes with a powerful message - that it is necessary in life to nurture relationships and have a goal in life that is larger than personal gratification. This is a personal quest on which I am currently embarking.
I have no negative things to say about the book and would highly recommend its purchase!

Terry Real’s book, I Don't Want to Talk About It, has been around since 1998. I just discovered it after using his book, The New Rules of Marriage, for couples as bibliotherapy, but that’s another story and excellent book.
Terry takes a Trauma Informed look at men and their childhood development. He concludes that men are denied their mother’s support at a critical time in their development: when they are taught to “be a man” by their fathers and the surrounding culture. Their transition from attachment to independence and emotional competence is never resolved.
Boys are admonished by the culture that “men don’t cry,” “your mom will turn you into a sissy boy,” or worse, they are admonished by their peers for being “gay” or a “girly boy” when showing feelings.
His thesis is that men are left susceptible to depression that is often suppressed into a covert form. One of the few feelings allowed readily expressed by men is anger. Anger, driven by deprivation maternal attachment into depression, explodes outward into rage, often directed at women.
Terry is a great writer and believes passionately in his Emotional Focused Therapy like approach to helping men.
And the book works as bibliotherapy, to tease out those suppressed emotions from men in therapy. Men can readily identify with Terry’s personal story and approach.

Useless for deep understanding, not good for beginners either

The book describes few concepts. A beginner would expect to see a bigger picture rather than a seemingly random set of methods or models. A professional would look for detailed explanation of concepts.The book provides neither. Descriptions are shallow, formulas contain errors, pseudo code is often wrong. Some description would better be replaced with concise and clear formulas, some formulas require explanations. The book needs a proof editing. However, the bigger problem is how the author presents the material.
I'd recommend a much better book to start with: "Neural Networks and Deep Learning" by Michael Nielsen.

No-buy for a beginner and not useful for a professional

The book is more like a quick compilation of a college student's note. Concepts are presented in a relatively isolated manner; connections between concepts are, for the large part, missing. Furthermore, if the materials presented are rather shallow like in this book, readers will expect to see a strong emphasis on, or hands on exercises of, practical applications. But this book doesn't seem to help much in that regard either, despite what the book claims. The book does give introduction to a bunch of models, which can be useful for a beginner. But at least this edition I wouldn't suggest any one to buy because of poor editing. For example, the pseudo code fragments listed in the book are often wrong, or different than what is described by the text. References to formulas, etc need some proof reading, too.

Lord Teach Us to Pray!

"The soul learns to pray by praying; for prayer is communion with a transcendent and immanent God who on the ground of his nature and attributes calls forth all the powers of the redeemed soul in acts of total adoration and dedication." (Preface)
The Puritans recognized that prayer and doctrine are not to be separated. In their prayers they kept the two together. In fact it was their doctrinal understanding, which indeed produced such deep, and lasting prayers. Theology instilled a thorough passion for prayer. Likewise it is prayer, which sinks us deeper into the mysteries of God's self-disclosure of himself. It is prayer, which furthers our theology.
It is to this end which we, as Christians must strive. We must search out our Triune God in prayer and devotion as we seek him in his word and through our prayers.
Arthur Bennett has provided the Church a great service by collecting the prayers of the saints. The book is arranged topically under the following headings: 1. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; 2. Redemption and Reconciliation; 3. Penitence and Deprecation; 4. Needs and Devotions; 5. Holy Aspirations; 6. Approach to God; 7. Gifts of Grace; 8. Service and Ministry; 9. Valediction; 10. A Week's Shared Prayers.
This book is excellent for both private and public devotion. The only disadvantage I found to the book was that each individual prayer was not attributed to its corresponding author. However this is probably a good idea in keeping with the intent of the book. Its intention is as a guide to lead us to prayer when the heart is cold or to further pour fuel on the heart, which is already aflame.
May this be used of the Lord to ignite our hearts in a holy passion toward him. O' Lord teach us to pray!

Perfect for daily meditation and prayer

This is truly an invaluable collection. With a little less than 200 prayers, I read one almost every morning during the week, and this lasts me roughly the year. Obviously, these prayers fall within the Reformed tradition, which is more than a little important. Other reviewers have covered what remaining points there might be to make about this book, so I'm going to end by including an example to give you a taste of what is within. This is by no means the best of the prayers; it simply fit my fancy at the time I read it:

"The Name of Jesus" (p. 21)

All-Searching God,

Thou readest the heart,

viewest principles and motives of actions,

seest more defilement in my duties

than I ever saw in any of my sins.

The heavens are not clean in thy sight,

and thou chargest the angels with folly;

I am ready to flee from myself because of my abominations;

Yet thou dost not abhor me

but hast devised means for my return to thee,

and that, by thy Son who died to give me life.

Thine honour is secured and displayed even in my escape from

thy threats,

and that, by means of Jesus

in whom mercy and truth meet together,

and righteousness and peace kiss each other.

In Him the enslaved find redemption,

the guilty pardon,

the unholy renovation;

In Him are everlasting strength for the weak,

unsearchable riches for the needy,

treasures of wisdom and knowledge for the ignorant,

fullness for the empty.

A Glimpse of Puritan Spirituality

I can read about three or four prayers before being overwhelmed by the depth and riches of these prayers. They show the depth of knowledge and wisdom of their writers, but even more they show the writers' deep abhorrence of their sin and devotion to God. They also show keen insight into the private sins of our hearts. These prayers are old; I had to frequently consult a dictionary to understand some words that are no longer in common use. I can't help but feel that Christianity in our day is terribly shallow compared to what the Puritans knew.
Each prayer is about one page long, has a brief title given by the book's editor, and is presented anonymously. The prayers are grouped into sections such as "Redemption and Reconciliation," "Holy Aspirations," and "Approach to God." A brief preface is the only background given, all the rest of the book is simply the prayers themselves.
I have only two faults with the book, but neither merit rating it less than five stars. First, the titles of the sections closely describe the main theme of that section, but the titles of the individual prayers do not consistently (in my mind) state the main theme of that prayer. Second, the prayers are not attributed to their authors, and I would very much like to know who wrote each one. However, I will allow that perhaps Arthur Bennett intended for us not to know so we would focus on the Creator rather than the creature.
One other thing to mention is that this is one of the most sturdy, well-published paperback books I have seen. After carrying this book on my commute to work for reading, it has held up much better than other paperbacks. The pages were so thick I often had to check the page numbers to make sure I had not skipped a page.
I highly recommend this book for all Christians for personal study to receive greater conviction of sin, more language to express your devotion to God, and instruction on how to pray fervently.

About the Author
"Richard Saferstein, Ph.D.," retired in 1991 after serving 21 years as the Chief Forensic Scientist of the New Jersey State Police Laboratory, one of the largest crime laboratories in the United States. He currently acts as a consultant for attorneys and the media in the area of forensic science. During the O. J. Simpson criminal trial, Dr. Saferstein provided extensive commentary on forensic aspects of the case for the "Rivera Live" show, the E! television network, ABC radio, and various radio talk shows. Dr. Saferstein holds degrees from the City College of New York and earned his doctorate degree in chemistry in 1970 from the City University of New York. From 1972 to 1991, he taught an introductory forensic science course in the criminal justice programs at the College of New Jersey and Ocean County College. These teaching experiences played an influential role in Dr. Saferstein's authorship in 1977 of the widely used introductory textbook "Criminalastics: An Introduction to Forensic Science," currently in this eighth edition. Saferstein's basic philosophy in writing Criminalistics is to make forensic science understandable and meaningful to the nonscience reader, while giving the reader an appreciation for the scientific principles that underlie the subject.

Dr. Saferstein currently teaches a course on the role of the expert witness in the courtroom at the law school of Widener University in Wilmington, Delaware. He has authored or co-authored more than 35 technical papers covering a variety of forensic topics. Dr. Saferstein has co-authored "Lab Manual for Criminalistics" (Prentice Hall, 2004) to be used in conjunction with this text. He has also edited the widely usedprofessional reference books "Forensic Science Handbook," Volume I, second edition (Prentice Hall, 2002) and "Forensic Science Handbook," Volumes II and III (Prentice Hall, 1988, 1993). Dr. Saferstein is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American-Academy of Forensic Sciences, the Forensic Science Society of England, the Canadian Society of Forensic Scientists, the International Association for Identification, the Mid-Atlantic Association of Forensic Scientists, the Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists, the Northwestern Association of Forensic Scientists, and the Society of Forensic Toxicologists.

First Year Forensic Science Degree Text Book!

This was used as a text book for an Australian university and it was incredibly handy! Really helps understand the basic principles behind forensic science! There are multiple case studies that relate to each aspect the book talks about, e.g fingerprinting, physical evidence ETC... Very easy to read and enjoyable! A must have for beginners!

Comprehensive

I bought this book as a refresher since it's been so long since I took a forensic course in school. It was comprehensive with topics covering trace evidence, DNA, firearms, fingerprints, etc. While not described in depth, this book provides introductions to these fields and is easily understandable (in my opinion) for someone with an interest in forensics.

Great book very interesting.

Bought this book for a biology class I was taking. It is very interesting with lots of cases to review and make you think. Only con is that I didn't get the "mycrimekit" registration number that should have come with the book. If you are buying this book, you want to make sure you get that number as well so you can go online and access more information.
