Sacra Pagina (The gospel of John)

Rather theological and deep explanation of the Gospel of John. Probably need some background to read it, but still can speak to all. Translations of parables are excellent and interesting issues are raised. Audience is more likely grad students and those somewhat steeped in theology, although it motivated me to take available classes and fill my gaps.

Solid Catholic Commentary - Tough Field

Francis Moloney's `The Gospel of John' is an installment in the recent Sacra Pagina series of Catholic biblical commentaries. This series seeks to combine modern critical analysis with Catholic tradition.

With respect to strengths, Moloney is a well-known Australian scholar and his writing is of a high academic quality. The book's layout is also helpful; small sections of text, followed by analysis, end-notes and finally recommendations for further reading. Though my preference is have notes at page bottom (to minimize flipping back and forth), given the book's structure the end-note approach is effective.

While I enjoyed the text, Moloney's tone and style were distracting at times. On the issue of style, it is a perennially difficult task to strike the right balance between readability and academic rigor in biblical commentaries. That said, however, the text has a choppy feel, characterized by excessive references, sub-divisions and outlines. While with regard to tone, many of Moloney's assertions strike me as too definitive. For example, in analyzing John 11:33 he states that Jesus' emotion (tears) is a result of anger - while this is possible, it has often been interpreted as a more nuanced combination of frustration and empathy. The point is not that Moloney's assessments are wrong - in fact, I think he is correct in much of his analysis - it is rather that they are too bold.

Overall this is a solid commentary. Perhaps the biggest challenge it faces in getting an audience is the tremendous amount of outstanding Gospel of John commentaries that are available. For readers interested in this subject, I recommend Brown (Catholic) or Carson (Reformed).

Another Great Volume in the SACRA PAGINA series

Many people have discovered the SACRA PAGINA commentaries and find these volumes both thorough and accessible for use. The volumes include an introduction to the overall work. The work itself is then exegeted. The author usually presents his/her own translation, an overall summary, and a line by line commentary. An extensive bibliography is included after each section which makes it ideal for students. Its ease of use makes it a valuable tool for preaching. Francis Moloney's commentary of John follows the same format as the other volumes in this series. It also follows the series reputation for excellence.

Moloney's approach to John's Gospel somewhat rejects what has commonly been believed about John's Gospel. Because so many of the stories seem somewhat disparate, it had been believed that the gospel was a collection of unrelated stories about Jesus. Moloney refutes this claim and sees John's Gospel as having a narrative unity and the stories and conflicts of the gospel reflect the concerns of the Johannine community. Therefore it is important to read his introduction prior to using this commentary. In the introduction includes what a reader should expect. He discusses the pertinent information about Johannine literature as well the controversies surrounding the author of this Gospel (Was the "Beloved Disciple" actually the Apostle John?) and information about the Johannine community. He also devotes some time to the use of the way in which the gospel's author uses the term "the Jews" and discusses the importance of sensitivity in using this work, something especially important as far as Jewish Christian relations would be concerned.

People who select this commentary will have to spend some time getting accustomed to it. It is organized in an orderly manner, but unlike other SACRA PAGINA commentaries, particularly Luke Timothy Johnson's volume on Luke and Daniel J. Harrington's commentary on Matthew, John's Gospel is less straightforward which requires a different approach in studying. Moloney's central themes resurface throughout the work so being familiar with his perspective is important. When Moloney's point of view is understood, readers discover one of the bets commentaries on John's Gospel available, and certainly the one of the finest Catholic commentaries that is both true to the gospel and offers a pastoral perspective as well.

Jenni Romaniuk is Research Professor and Associate Director (International) of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, at the University of South Australia. Jenni's research covers Brand equity, Mental Availability, Brand Health Metrics, Advertising effectiveness, Distinctive assets, Word of mouth and the role of Loyalty and Growth. She is the developer of the Distinctive Asset Grid, which is used by companies around the world to assess the strength and strategic potential of their brand's distinctive assets. She is also a pioneer in Mental Availability measurement and metrics. Jenni is Executive Editor (International) of the Journal of Advertising Research, and is on the Editorial review board for four other journals. She has published in journals such as the Journal of Business Research, Journal of Marketing Management, Marketing Theory and European Journal of Marketing.

Dr Byron Sharp is Professor of Marketing Science, and the Director of the Ehrenberg-Bass Institute, at the University of South Australia. The Ehrenberg-Bass Institute's research is used and financially supported by many of the world's leading corporations, including Coca-Cola, Colgate-Palmolive, First National Bank, General Motors, Procter & Gamble, Turner Broadcasting, CBS, ESPN, and Unilever. Byron's book 'How Brands Grow' was voted marketing book of the year by AdAge readers in 2013. He has also published over 100 academic papers and is on the editorial board of five journals. He recently co-hosted with Professor Jerry Wind two conferences at the Wharton Business School on the laws of advertising, and co-edited the 2009 and 2013 special issues of the Journal of Advertising Research on scientific laws of advertising. His university textbook 'Marketing: theory, evidence, practice' (Oxford University Press) was released in 2013.

Reading this book feels like winning the lottery

The marketing world is so full of anecdotes, it's like if a doctor prescribed your a medication without any scientific backing or research, relying only on his instincts and hunch (which scientists have proven over and over to be unreliable for a big number of situations). 99.9% of marketing books are like these. Not only the advice they provide is not helpful, but also HURTS the product/brand you'll promote (as mentioned in this book in the part of user personas).

I stumbled upon Byron Sharp's work quite accidentally by reading a book called "Applying Scientific Reasoning to the Field of Marketing" where Dr. Sharp was the only marketing professor this author mentioned. I started doing some research and discovered his original "How Brands Grow" book. The principles totally changed the way I look upon marketing, it felt like I suddenly took the "red pill" and many things became crystal clear on why some products I thought were nothing special in quality were popular and with big market share and why some extraordinary products were so-and-so in popularity (tip: advertising and the fact people don't think much about products).

This second book focuses more on the HOW to part which is what we've been all waiting for. In Chapter 1, the authors give a brief summary of the fundamental principles of the book. It's like "How brands grow brief summary + what we know since then". Then in subsequent characters, they go on debunking popular myths which could save marketers thousands of wasted hours in applying principles that yield no effect. After this, they provide more specific how-to advice on principles that DO work and how to implement them conceptually. For more detailed instructions, there are footnotes with the appropriate studies.

Sometimes reading this book (and the first "How Brands Grow") feels like winning the lottery. I still don't understand why this book isn't required reading for every marketing course out there. It makes me wonder how evidence-focused marketing professors really are (this is the only book out of 100s I've seen that backs up 100% of what it says with evidence.) Maybe it's the fact that there are huge market research companies and consultancy agencies (where these professors are on the board) that charge hefty fees for doing "segmentation" (a principle debunked by this book), "targeted reach" (also a non-effective tactic which is elaborated in this book) and "differentiation" (which also doesn't work). This incentive is multiplied because those firms can charge even more fees by claiming their work produces a better segmented audience, a more laser-targeted reach and even bigger differentiation. If they go and actually accept the evidence here, they'll have to say...sorry guys everything we did for you was proven ineffective. We'll have to totally revise what we're doing or shut our doors.

Consider yourself VERY lucky if you came upon this book, because the odds were against you (it isn't advertised in mainstream media as much as pop-marketing gurus, so you were either very lucky to somehow stumble upon it or crazy persistent like me to throw every marketing book out there that doesn't provide any evidence behind its claims and keep searching for that one which does).

Best Marketing book you will ever buy.

I was very skeptical about the recommendation I got on the first book. I thought after 30 year of marketing with companies like P & G, Kraft, T-Mobile and Mars I knew enough about marketing. I was wrong. I found it to be the best clear headed marketing book I have have read in years. THere is so much baloney that passes for marketing today. This book and the first book by Sharp approach marketing from a much more realistic basis. The book explains how many platitudes about marketing are just not true. If you are serious about your craft, I suggest you read these two books.

How Brands Grow part 2 is a must read for all those interested in understanding what makes the difference between big, successful brands and small brands.
This new book brings all the insights of 'How Brands Grow - what marketers don't know' to the next level, providing practical examples on how to measure mental availability, distinctive assets and physical availability. Additionally it also provides plenty of data points on emerging markets - very useful and relevant to demonstrate that the laws of growth hold true also in less developed, often fast growing markets.
I found 'how brands grow - part 2' as inspiring as the former and possibly even better in providing guidance about implementing the laws of growth in real business life.

This book is the first ever atlas of human white matter tracts but it is also much more. The first 70 pages contain a short history of important advances and great figures in surface and white matter anatomy. Here the reader also find general principles of connectionist and clinico-anatomical theory. Next comes the atlas (pgs 75-238). Then, an description and discussion of functional brain networks and theory underlying white matter anatomy for memory, language, attention, coordinate, emotion, and more.
The writing is clear and organized and the illustrations are beautiful. I do most of my reading and research online and rarely like or use textbooks. But I have spent many hours reading and rereading this book for work and for pleasure and always learning much.

The Atlas offers not only a wonderful collection of tagged brain MRI/DTI views along axial, coronal, and saggital planes for the major projections, but focused and accessible introductions to each section on the major pathways, e.g. Perisylvian, limbic, etc. For advanced students in neuropsychology and clinical neurology, this is an excellent introduction to the gathering revolution in "hodotopic analysis" unleashed by advances in functional brain imaging such as DTI.

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen is professor of business and public policy, regional science, and transportation at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Professor Allen won the Anvil Award for Teaching Excellence in 1991, and the Miller-Sherred MBA Core Curriculum Teaching Award in 1994 and 1997. He has consulted with a variety of firms and government agencies in the area of transportation and energy economies.

Keith Weigelt is professor of strategy at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests lie in game theory, compensation, experimental economics, and the economics of sports. In addition to teaching managerial economics in the Wharton MBA program, Professor Weigelt runs the Field Application Program required at Wharton of all first year MBA students. Through this program, students work on consulting projects with a wide range of firms.

Neil Doherty is Ronald A. Rosenfeld Professor and professor of insurance and risk management at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He won the Undergraduate Excellence in Teaching Award in 1997 and the Miller-Sherred MBA Core Curriculum Teaching Award in 1998. Professor Doherty has consulted with numerous major firms including Amerco, Dow Chemical, Sears Roebuck, British Petroleum, Merck, GTE, CIGNA, and UPS.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. Norton, have sold millions of copies around the world. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Decent textbook, not a good 7th ed replacement

For a class I was supposed to have the 7th edition of this book. The text is mostly the same, but very few of the work problems were the same, so I had to always borrow books from classmates or have them send me the questions. There's nothing wrong with the book, but just know that if you are in the situation I was in, you won't be able to get all your problems from this book.

Great book for shy professionals

Other reviewers called this book a how-to on being insincere and manipulative. I think they completely missed the point. This book is pure and simple a guide for professionals who are shy or need improvement in their social skills.

When you're in the business/professional world, social skills sign your checks, so this is an essential read for career-oriented people who are a little shy or are rusty at communicating. Not knowing how to make diplomatic small talk in this world is like showing up to work everyday wearing a HITLER WAS FRAMED t-shirt. The people who have natural social skills don't appreciate the fact that good social skills are taught. They're taught by parents, they're taught by friends, and some people just have to teach themselves. This book is pretty damn good for those people.

I use to be so incredibly shy that I didn't even want to leave my house. At one point my father died and I realized my own mortality and decided to go out and become a better person and to get over my shyness. I bought a few books on confidence building and books on how to hold conversations with people. I had very bad friends who put me down and who were completely selfish. I just had bad company.

This book helped me so much in understanding how to hold a conversation with people. Leil Lowndes is a great writer and she really udnerstands what it takes to become more confident in your conversation and in yourself as a person.

Could you use this to be phony and superficial? Yup, but that's up to your personality and what you wish to take from this book. I decided to use this to be able to understand how to hold conversations with people and know how to create relationships. I used this one technique called the flooding smile and that as well as a few other techniques from this book and I'm now dating this beautiful girl and have a few new friends who are positive and make me feel good about myself. I bought this and the other books by Leil Lowndes. I'd definitely consider this book as one of my Meccas as well as a few other books.

How to socialize more smoothly

The 92 tricks in this book are techniques for making yourself more pleasant to talk to. People need the lubrication of small talk and etiquette for dealing with each other. Much of our interaction with each other is fairly shallow, but this shallow interaction is helpful for getting to the deeper interaction. Indeed, this book gives techniques for fairly shallow interaction between people, but knowing how to be good at shallow interaction gives you a larger number of people than you would have otherwise who are comfortable with you, with whom you can then have deeper interactions. "You see, small talk is not about facts or words. It's about music, about melody. Small talk is about putting people at ease. It's about making comforting noises together like cats purring, children humming, or groups chanting. You must first match your listener's mood." (p. 48) What I took away from this book is a greater respect for social graces.

The five top tricks that I want to remember are: look at someone for a moment before breaking into a smile (to make them feel that the smile is a response to them in particular, rather than something that's always pasted on your face); hang by your teeth posture (it seems like a good way to remember what good posture is supposed to look like); match the energy level of your conversation partner; when asked where you're from or what you do, give some story to make it interesting rather than merely giving a naked city or job; regularly scramble your life (do something you'd never dream of doing, to get a broad base of experiences that will give you something in common with a larger number of people).
