A must have for anyone serious about biomechanics

This book is a must have for biomechanics Graduate students. It looks at biomechanics from an engineering standpoint and technological standpoint, not just a math/physics standpoint. It is much cheaper (used) and just as good as the third edition. The only meaningful thing the third edition does better is describe filters (butterworth, spline, etc.). Some other parts of this book could be better explained, but I like the shortness of it overall. It also has Demster's anthropometric data in it that is the most commonly used for inverse dynamic solutions in biomechanics. Overall a great book and I'd recommend it to any advanced biomechanics student, even over the third edition all things considered.

This text is used in graduate classes across disciplines such as Exercise Science, Physical Therapy, Biomechanics, Motor Control / Neuroscience. It has emerged as one of the cornerstones of quantitative analysis of human motion. If you're in the field, you should know this book like the back of your hand. Concise, comprehensive and a great starting point for much discussion.

About the Author

David C. Thomas (PhD, University of South Carolina) is currently the Beedie Professor of International Management at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. He is the author of ten books, including most recently The Multicultural Mind: Unleashing the Hidden Force for Innovation in Your Organization (Berrett-Kohler Publishers). He has also authored Essentials of International Human Resource Management: Managing People Globally from SAGE Publications (with Mila B. Lazarova) and the best selling Cultural Intelligence: People Skills for Global Business, published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers (with Kerr Inkson). With Peter B. Smith and Mark F. Peterson he published the Handbook of Cross-Cultural Management Research from SAGE Publications. His research on cross-cultural interactions in organizational settings has appeared in numerous journals. He is a past Area Editor for the Journal of International Business Studies and currently serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Advances in Global Leadership and European Journal of Cross-Cultural Competence and Management.

His previous academic postings have included positions at the Pennsylvania State University, the University of Auckland, New Zealand, where he was also Director of the Master of International Business Program, and The Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) Sydney, Australia. He has held visiting positions at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the University of Hawaii, Massey University, New Zealand, ESCEM, Tours, France, and Koç University, Istanbul, Turkey. In addition to teaching at both the undergraduate and the postgraduate level, Dr. Thomas has developed executive education programs in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and the United States and has served as a consultant to numerous multinational firms and government agencies. When not writing or teaching he can most likely be found scraping or varnishing or sometimes sailing his 1984 Hans Christian cutter, “Clovelly”.

Mark F. Peterson (PhD, University of Michigan) holds the Hofstede Chair in Cultural Diversity at Maastricht University. He has published over 120 articles and chapters, and several books. The articles have appeared in major management and international management journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, the Academy of Management Journal, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Organizational Behavior, Leadership Quarterly, Human Relations, Management International Review, Organization Studies, and Organization Science. He has also contributed international management themes to the basic social science literature through chapters in the Annual Review of Psychology, the Communication Yearbook, the Handbook of Industrial and Organizational Psychology, and Research in the Sociology of Organizations. He is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Organizational Behavior and an Area Editor for the Journal of International Business Studies.

His previous positions have been at Wayne State University, the University of Miami, Texas Tech University, and Florida Atlantic University. He has had visiting positions supported by Fulbright Fellowships to Osaka University and McMaster University, and he held the John R. Galvin Chair at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He has also had visiting positions at the University of Pennsylvania and Aarhus University. Along with Mikael Soendergaard, Geert Hofstede, Michael Minkov, Gert Jan Hofstede, and others, he teaches an annual summer Ph.D. master class in cross cultural management at various locations in Europe. When at his home in Homestead, Florida, he spends his weekends tending to a collection of orchids and making orchid hybrids.

About the Author

Elizabeth E. Guzmán is the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program at the University of Iowa. Previously, she served as Language Coordinator at St. John’s University/College of St. Benedict, Director of the Spanish Program at Yale University, and Coordinator and Co-Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Language Program at The University of Michigan. In her native Chile, she supervised instructors of English as a Foreign Language. Ms. Guzmán received her B.A in English from Universidad de Santiago (Chile) and her M.A. in English as a Second Language from West Virginia University, and then pursued doctoral studies at the University of Pittsburgh. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades and several earlier editions of Mosaicos.

 

Paloma Lapuerta holds the title ofProfessor of Spanish at Central Connecticut State University, where she teaches courses in Spanish language, culture, and literature. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at higher institutions around the world, including Spain, Switzerland, South Africa, and the United States, where she has taught at the University of Michigan, Dartmouth College, and the Middlebury College Spanish School. She completed her Licenciatura in Spanish Philology at the University of Salamanca, and she holds a Ph.D. in Spanish literature from the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She has published numerous articles and a book on Spanish culture and literature. She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

 

Judith E. Liskin-Gasparro is a professor of Spanish at the University of Iowa, where she teaches courses in second language acquisition, pedagogy, and Spanish language. She is the co-director of FLARE (Foreign Language Acquisition Research and Education), which offers an interdisciplinary doctoral program in Second Language Acquisition, and she was formerly the Director of the Elementary and Intermediate Spanish Language Program. Previously, she taught at Middlebury College and worked as a test development consultant at Educational Testing Service. She received her A.B. in Spanish from Bryn Mawr College, her M.A. from Princeton University and her Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin in Foreign Language Education. She has published articles and books on language learning and teaching and has led many workshops for language teachers.She is a co-author of Pearson’s Unidos, Identidades, La escritura paso a paso, and earlier editions of Mosaicos, all published by Prentice Hall.

The relationshipthat the author has with Pearson language labs should be scrutinized very carefully. I
I have been. consistently frustrated by the manner inwhich they approach helping students to learn. Hours are consistently spent working out answers to the exercises. To add to the dilemma is the fact that their resource personnel, in some cases, do not speak Spanish and/or do not have the know how to help students reason out why they have received partially correct responses. Everything came great. No problems at all. However, I had returned the rentals back to the address on July 29. It should have arrived on the first of August. I kept getting emails saying I still have to ship my textbook before the deadline. I wanted to check in with that.

Not the best Spanish book

This Spanish book could have been written better. I used this book for Spanish One and my professor was constantly putting it down and pointing out errors in the book. It did help me to learn some basic Spanish, but it definitely wasn't the best.

Adds a folkloric aspect that many other similar reference works lack

I've always been a big fan of Claude Lecouteux's work, and when I heard he was publishing a reference work relating to Germanic lore, I pre-ordered it at once. It finally arrived, and I've had a chance to look through it. And it is everything I had hoped it would be.

The obvious comparisons are going to be made between this work and other reference works on Germanic religion and mythology, such as A Dictionary of Northern Mythology (probably the standard in the field, at least in English), Cassell's Dictionary of Norse Myth & Legend (Cassell Reference), Norse Mythology: A Guide to Gods, Heroes, Rituals, and Beliefs, and to a lesser extent Encyclopaedia of the Viking Age.

Where Lecouteux's book distinguishes itself from those titles is both in its lack of focus on the Norse material and the Viking era (although it does not distance itself from either), as well as its inclusion of tons of folkloric references, rather than sticking to the same old themes found in Norse and/or Germanic mythology. And that in particular is where this work shines, since this is a focus that all too few such works, let alone Asatruar who endeavor to recreate the Germanic mindset, have.

That the book was originally written in French (and, I presume, published in that language) gives the entries an international appeal that is so often denied to those of us without fluency in a variety of European languages. The sources span the gamut from Germany, France, Poland, Scandinavia, and even further afield. Just having access to condensed entries based on that broad range of material is a reason to get this book.

But to take a few of the more interesting entries as examples of the breadth and depth of the coverage, we have subjects as varied as Hernoss, a sort of idol that was still to be found in Norway in the 19th century, a brief discussion of changelings (children who are stolen from their parents and substituted with supernatural children), a lengthy discussion of Perchta, and Ourk, said to be the name of the leader of the Wild Hunt in a district in the Tyrol. This in addition to the standard entries on Norse gods and mythological themes that one would expect in a book of this type.

All in all, this is a fantastic book, and well worth it for the wealth of folkloric sources, as well as the conventional entries informed by folklore, that it brings to the table. I don't think it replaces Simek's Dictionary, but rather it accompanies it well, filling in all manner of gaps. It definitely stands as a worthy addition to any Asatruar's library. Five stars out of five.

The front matter to what Beranbaum terms her "bread biography" contains perhaps the best explanation anywhere of how yeast works and a description of the sponge method used for almost every yeast-risen bread. Each recipe also includes a "Rose ratio," which shows at a glance the percentage of water, yeast, flour and fat in each bread. The author's discussion of the pros and cons of various kneading methods (bread machine, by hand, etc.) is invaluable. After all this information, bakers will be eager to get to the recipes, which are equally rewarding. Beranbaum covers everything from a Chocolate Bread made with cocoa nibs to a Traditional Challah. Recipes are arranged by type of bread, with groups including sandwich loaves and dinner rolls and brioche breads. A chapter on artisanal hearth breads includes Heart of Wheat Bread, with wheat germ for extra crunch, and New Zealand Almond and Fig Bread with an apricot glaze. Every time Beranbaum seems about to go overboard with too much information, she steps back from the brink, as in the excellent introduction to sourdough, where she thoroughly explains how sourdough works, then provides a simple box with eight rules for making a starter. Beranbaum could have a second career as a scientist, but luckily for home bakers she seems intent on creating a library of seminal cookbooks instead.

Fantastic content, HORRIBLE kindle edition.

This is a fantastic book, the content is great. The poor rating relates to the kindle edition. It is one of the worst paper book to e-book transitions I have seen. The table of contents just lists chapter names without any listing of the recipes contained in each chapter. There is no easy way to find or jump to an individual recipe. The index is a useless joke in that it doesn't link to or show locations of the indexed words. The illustrations do not render well and often seem to be in the wrong place related to the text. I wish I could return it and just get the paper version (which I have gotten from the library in the past and have loved).

Is it just me?!!

I rarely write a review but I am compelled by my continuous failures at producing reasonable loves from this so called "bible" . More like fishes than the loaves for me. I have tried several of the recipes, and although I have been successfully baking for 50 odd years, with almost no failure, this book is my Waterloo. I have yet to have an absolute success, but the cinnamon raisin bread did me in. I was skeptical as I followed the process, with as it turned out, good reason. Heavy, heavy heavy. Blog search, as usual with every recipe I have tried from this book. All I can say is good luck and try Tartines bread book.

Excellent but annoyingly flawed in places

This is a beautifully illustrated book with detailed directions for making all sorts of breads. The Jewish rye and pumpernickel came out great. Directions are quite detailed (with variants for hand or machine mixing and kneading and measures in English volume, ounces, and grams). In the recipes I've tried, the author uses start-them four-hours-to-a-day-before sponge starters... with three rises, so prepare to spend a lot of time from start to eat. It's worth the effort in my view.

B*U*T the proofreading in this book totally sucks. Both the recipes mentioned above were wrong as printed. Fortunately, I went to the author's web site to pick up errata after finding the first error. Errors are silly such as telling you to lower the oven temperature from 400 degrees to 400 degrees (only Farenheit oven temps, by the way) -- or subtle such as telling you to add rye flour when rye flour isn't even in the ingredients list. So definitely read carefully through each recipe before starting and check the author's site for corrections before proceeding.

But for the proofreading issues it would have been 5 stars.

Great Beginner's Book

I took a piano course at my University and we used this book. There are a lot of fun songs to play in it, and they scale well in terms of difficulty and complexity as the book progresses. I can pretty much play anything in the book now. I'll definitely try out the second book as well.

Terrific Book for a Beginning Pianist

I had never played an instrument before, not even knowing how to read music. I'm roughly halfway through this book, but I can now read both bass and treble staff fairly quickly, and I'm able to play simple songs utilizing both hands. This book breaks things down into small chunks and allows you to practice until you're proficient before moving on to the next small chunk. When I finish this I'm definitely going to get Book 2.

great book for the adult learner looking for more classical tunes and recognizable songs from the get-go

I ordered this book for self-teaching piano based off of the numerous positive reviews here on Amazon. I am so glad I did. I have the Hal Leonard Adult Piano Method, book 1 and though I enjoyed that one, I didn't feel completely satisfied as a learner after about a month with that book. I come to the piano as someone who never studied it, but I have played the flute for 20 years, so I do know how to read music. This book is organized well for the total musical novice, but is also organized in such a way that someone who reads music already and understands the grand staff (thank you Hal Leonard book for that!) can do the quick exercises at the beginning of each section and then jump into practicing the tunes that are recognizable and easy for a beginner, but are satisfying because the songs are songs we hear and know. You get to feel like you're playing real classical music (and some other tunes) right at the start. I'm so very glad I bought this book. Also a total plus with this book is the fact that there are people who have played these tunes on youtube. Just type in "adult piano adventures" and the song name or "faber" and the song name you're looking for, and there will be youtube video you can watch that help you get the rhythm of the song right and the melody.

Awesome Dictionary!!

I needed this dictionary for a simple coding class that I am taking, but am finding it very interesting and helpful as well in explaining the details of medical illnesses and diagnoses for complications that occur during operations, etc. I am very pleased with this book. The graphics are very intense, so if you have a sensitive stomach, I wouldn't suggest getting it, but I've been in the medical field for 20+ years, so am fascinated by it. Plus, what haven't you seen on TV already, right? LOL Good luck to those of you looking for for a dictionary, but if you want something detailed and structured, this is the book for you!

I have used this resource even more than I expected to during my nursing school program. It is loaded with color pictures, and definitions are easy to understand. I highly recommend this medical dictionary to any health career professional or student, or any person trying to really understand what their doctor is telling them!

Wonderful read. Not just a dictionary.

Discovered it in a previous version when I was a student. Just bought this version for the "love" of it and to have around the house to answer questions in useful detail. Superb color illustrations throughout. Thorough, readable text. This'll be a lifetime "keeper".

Don't waste your time

Very basic book. The bottom left corner of the cover states "video education included". Since no DVD comes with the book I emailed the publisher to see how to access the videos (?online). I never received a response. Like many trading books, this book has an impressive title, an inflated price and little value.
