I'm a big fan.

I bought this book to accompany Van Edwards Udemy courses. I have since become a huge fan of her insight and it has even helped me on my job. The actual book has the look and feel of a self published book but the information inside is first rate, never heavy and actually quite entertaining. The author has a public website with ever increasing and relevant topics as well. If you are interested in this subject buy the book and head over to Udemy on the web to check out her two courses. I have read a couple other books on the subject and they were heavy technical boring works. Not so with this book. Very readable and can easily be used as a reference. You'll watch people a lot differently after reading this book.

Very bite size in information. I know that is the style, but if you want a really meaty book on the subject, go for Paul Eckman's book. If you are busy and want something simple and to the point, this is a good choice.

Keeping staff honest

This book is interesting. I had looked to buy it before but had no time to read then and figured by the time the book was ordered, mailed and I got it, I'd have lost interest. The book came quickly and I am reading it (at work) while the boss is on vacation. Oh, I'm still at my desk answering phones and helping staff, but I now know when someone says they are sick and want to go home, if they are actually just taking the day off for fun purposes.

The pictures are amazing and have a wide variety of scenes

I had been watching Jordan's instagram posts for a while so i had an idea what i was in store for, but was blown away with the final results.

Ordered the hard cover which comes with an ice sleeve as well. All the pictures are very well done, many are in NYC and many are overseas as well. The pictures are amazing and have a wide variety of scenes. Anywhere from sleek urban settings, to ice water in Colorado. Its also interesting that he time stamps the pictures, so in the city pics you have an idea what would be going on at that time.

From Mr. Matter's earlier work, I knew his captures of dancers would be amazing. But here he worked in low light, often with limited time, and still outdid my expectations. The book is a real treat.

A review for laypeople

This is a vast medical reference book, written in technical language for practicing clinicians. That, of course, does not mean that it can't be endlessly fascinating and useful for so-called "laypeople" as well.

Always wanted to be a doctor? Grades were never good enough? Couldn't afford it? Not to worry. This book is the wannabe physician's dream, and the hypochondriac's worst nightmare. It covers the entire range of human illness and injury, including symptoms, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. No other medical reference book comes close to its exhaustive coverage and scientific excellence. Potential readers should keep in mind that this book is NOT a drug reference, but a manual for general clinical practice. If you want to know the infinite details about your favorite pills, you'll need the Physician's Desk Reference as well.

The book has thousands of tissue-paper thin pages, all filled with text. There are no photographs, few graphics of any kind, and only a few tables. It's a massive encyclopedia. For the curious and well-informed layperson, I recommend this book over the watered-down home version. It's not that the home version is "dumbed down." It isn't, but the real thing is far more scientifically penetrating in analysis, cause and treatment options. The technical language can be a bit daunting without a good medical dictionary (or an M.D. or D.O. degree), but once you learn a few recurring terms you'll find this book to be the best self-doctoring tool you've ever put your hands on. The only thing you won't be able to do is write your own prescriptions! Your doctor will just HATE you for it.

New editions of the Merck Manual come around every six years or so, and sometimes it takes as long as ten, so this edition will be current for at least another five years. I know it sounds perverted, but I bought this book because I enjoy the science behind it. I read it just to learn new fascinating things about the wonderful field of medicine, and you can too! If anything, you'll appreciate how brilliant your medical professionals are.

Merck Manual

The manual is divided by the human body system (i.e. derm, neuro, muscle, etc.). This is both good and bad. Good if you know what system is causing the problem, but not good if you're not sure. I have a biology background so I thought I'd be able to understand a lot of it, but it is quite technical in the verbiage. It's better than the internet because it describes the rarity or commonness of the disease/ailment, which if you've ever googled an ailment you know how scary that can be! It is succinct and not dramatic. I can definitely relate to why doctors seem so calm, because the technical side is very matter-of-fact. Overall, I'm glad I own it and would recommend it; however, I will definitely supplement it with other medical books.

Eve Titus (1905–2002) wrote many books for children during her long career, including the Basil of Baker Street books and the Anatole series.

Paul Galdone (1907–1986) illustrated hundreds of children’s books, including the Basil of Baker Street series and the Anatole books, which received Caldecott Honors. He was posthumously awarded the 1996 Kerlan Award for his contribution to children’s literature.

Basil and the Cave of Cats 1 THE CLUE OF THE GOLDEN GOBLET
MINIATURE CATS! BREATHES THERE, IN all the world, a mouse who is not stirred by those two words?

Did the miniature monsters actually exist? Our leading mouse scientists were not certain, but they all believed the answer would be found in the Orient.

It was Basil of Baker Street, the Sherlock Holmes of the Mouse World, who solved the mystery. He used his skill as a scientific sleuth to bring to light secrets long hidden behind the curtains of the past, secrets no other mouse had been able to discover.

Professor Ratigan, leader of the mouse underworld, stalked him at every turn! Danger was Basil’s constant companion. Ratigan’s spies were at the border, in the jungle, on the ship, and—

But let me tell you how the adventure began. . . .

The year is 1894. The place is London, England, at Baker Street, Number 221B, where live Mr. Sherlock Holmes and his friend, Dr. John H. Watson.

Mr. Holmes is the World’s Greatest Human Detective. Basil is the World’s Greatest Mouse Detective, and I, Dr. David Q. Dawson, am his friend.

We dwell in the cellar of 221B, in the mouse town of Holmestead, which Basil named after his hero. My friend would often scurry up secret passageways to Mr. Holmes’ rooms. There he would take notes in shortpaw as the human detective told Dr. Watson exactly how he solved his difficult cases. One might say that Basil studied at the great man’s feet.

Did Mr. Holmes ever see his small admirer, hidden in a corner? I believe he did, and that it pleased him to pass his methods on to a mouse.

And such a mouse! I am of average height, about five inches tall, but Basil towers a full inch above me.

My notebook is crammed with accounts of his cases. I am a busy doctor, but whenever possible, I take pen in paw to write of his achievements. Would that I had time to narrate them all!

There was the Mystery of the Bald-Headed Mouse, a bank director. One foggy morning he stepped out of his office and vanished, along with a lot of the bank’s money. Mouseland Yard detectives sought him with no success, but Basil studied the clues and found the bald banker in Edinburgh, wearing a wig and using another name. Most of the stolen funds were untouched, for spending large sums in Scotland would have drawn attention to the thief at once.

Then there was the Case of the Guinea-Pig Gang. The honest mice of London dared not venture out at night until Basil cleverly found the criminals’ hideout and had them all jailed.

But of all his cases, Basil’s own favorite is the Adventure of the Cave of Cats. It put to use all his remarkable skill as a sleuth, plus his vast knowledge of the science of archeology.

Basil’s hobby was archeology. He had discovered Rockhenge, the ancient mouse ruins near London.

Interviewed by newspapermice, Basil said, “The most exciting detective work in the world is archeology! As we dig, clues keep turning up. Arrowheads, old weapons, broken bowls—any or all may hold clues to the life and times of prehistoric mice. The calendar stone I found at Rockhenge, for example, proved that mice perfected a 365-day calendar long before mankind. Clearly, archeology is the highest form of detective work, for lessons we learn from the past help mice to build a better, brighter future!”

The clues concerning the cave of cats were to take us halfway across the world, to the Far East.

Originally we had planned our trip to the Orient for a different reason—to restore the Maharajah of Bengistan to his rightful throne.

Cyril the Stoolpigeon had brought word that our enemy, Professor Ratigan, now ruled Bengistan, a mouse kingdom near India.

Too large to enter, the pigeon stood at our window to tell us what a little bird had told him.

In a surprise move the Professor and his gang had stormed and taken the palace. They guarded the border day and night. The Maharajah was unharmed, but kept prisoner in his private apartments in the palace. Ratigan taxed everything, even cheese! Mice too poor to pay the tax starved. And all the tax money went into Ratigan’s pockets!

“Thank you, Cyril,” said Basil. “You may pick up your reward at the back window. Mrs. Judson, our mousekeeper, baked blackberry tarts today.”

Cyril, grinning happily, was off in a trice.

Basil’s eyes blazed. “That rat Ratigan! Robbing our friend of his throne! I cannot stand idly by—we leave for the Orient at dawn. Can you arrange to have another doctor attend your patients?”

I could, and did, by nightfall. Then, having packed, we relaxed in easy chairs before the fire.

The doorbell jangled, and Mrs. Judson ushered in Dr. Edvard Hagerup, a Norwegian scientist from the British Mousmopolitan Museum.

After we all shook paws, he held up a golden goblet of ancient design. I reproduce it below.

Basil studied the goblet, and chuckled. “My word! Elotana, Goddess of Goodness! European mice worshipped her thousands of years ago. Look—kneeling before her are cats scarcely the size of mice! Where was the goblet found?”

“In Turkey,” said Hagerup. “It proves that miniature cats existed. We of the Mousmopolitan know you are going to the Orient. We feel you are the only mouse who can solve this mystery. Will you try?”

Basil nodded. “Gladly, after I’ve captured Ratigan. A noted archeologist once said, ‘One pits one’s wits against the past!’ How true! This will be the most challenging case of my career!”

Quickly Basil sketched the scene on the goblet, and the Norwegian departed with the original.

That night scores of miniature cats marched through my slumbers, shaking with fright at the sight of me. Seldom have I enjoyed more delightful dreams!

Good Book

I bought this to find a fun book for my first grade students who are reading above grade level. I really enjoyed the story and felt with guidance on some of the vocabulary, the story fits the bill. Most second graders and all third graders would enjoy this book. Nice illustration, well paced, interesting.

About the Author
On March 8, 2015, we unexpectedly lost our dear friend and co-author Gene Whittenburg. As the original author of INCOME TAX FUNDAMENTALS, Gene was critical in designing the forms-based approach that the book has used successfully for more than two decades. It is simply not possible to quantify the degree of our loss. Gene started his life in small-town Texas; entered the Navy; served his country in Vietnam, earned Bachelor's, Master's and Ph.D. degrees; and served as a distinguished faculty member at San Diego State University for almost 40 years. The outpouring of sorrow and gratitude from countless former students and colleagues are a wonderful tribute to Gene's love and devotion to teaching. We intend to continue to honor Gene by upholding his standard of publishing excellence for many years to come.

Dr. Steven Gill is an Assistant Professor of accounting and taxation in the Charles W. Lamden School of Accountancy at San Diego State University. He received a B.S. in Accounting from the University of Florida, a M.S. in Taxation from Northeastern University and a Ph.D. in Accounting from the University of Massachusetts. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Gill worked almost 12 years in the field of accounting, serving in key roles in public accounting, internal audit, corporate accounting and, ultimately, vice president of finance. Although currently in inactive status, Dr. Gill held a Certified Public Accountant designation. His research interests include a concentration in taxation including mutual funds and college savings ("529") plans and wider interests in the behavior of taxpayers when facing taxes with little or no enforcement. Dr. Gill has published a wide variety of articles in various academic and practitioner journals. He has taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels with a focus on teaching taxation and financial accounting.

Martha Altus-Buller is a CPA with more than 25 years of tax accounting experience. She attended Reed College in Portland, Oregon for two years, holds a B.A. in Mathematics from the University of California at San Diego and a M.S. in Accounting from San Diego State University. Ms. Altus Buller was awarded the Sells award for scoring among the top in the country on the May 1983 CPA exam. Her practical experience includes work as a tax manager for Arthur Young, now Ernst & Young, one of the Big 8 accounting firms at the time.

Overpriced but decent

The book is fine. It's outrageously overpriced just like every textbook and several basic pieces of information are incorrect for the current tax year (several tax tables). For the price the publisher insists on charging, it should be PERFECT. But it's written in a way that's understandable and it at least gets the job done.

A necessary book to purchase for class. However, DO NOT purchase if you need CENGAGENOW-this is not the bundle offer, just as the description stated it only comes with the H&R Block access code. Fairly easy to read and there were some chapters that needed more clarification that can be obtain through class discussion. I agree that this book is overpriced. The best thing was that It arrived on time as promised.

The Raga Guide includes four CDs with over five hours of music. It will be essential reading for listeners and conoisseurs, students and scholars. JOEP BOR is a professor at Leiden University. He was the founder of the Rotterdam World Music Department, and the artistic advisor for the Amsterdam India Festival. He has written extensively on Indian music.

About the Author
Jeffrey Rutzky has always had a passion for arts and crafts, and has integrated them with his desktop publishing skills to create unique works of art. He is also the author and designer of several papercraft books, including Kirigami Kit, TearPlanes, Jewelgami, and Bugagami. Rutzky works as an artist and graphic designer in New York City.

Chris K. Palmer is a professional artist who has been designing and folding origami since childhood. In Granada, Spain, he was inspired by the mosaic tilings of the Alhambra. Persistent effort and study of the Japanese hira-ori technique led Palmer to make the leap from paper folding to Shadowfolds. Palmer has taught art and architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology and the University of Colorado at Boulder. He now resides in California.

An easy technique that creates beautiful effects

I first encountered this sew-and-fold technique at a workshop. It was impressive. Even people who had at most a utilitarian acquaintance with needle and thread were able to create a beautiful folded pinwheel figure in the center of an organza square. I was therefore delighted when the book finally came out.

How it works:

1. Start with one of the authors' patterns of dots, transferred to a piece of fabric.

2. With needle and thread, in the order specified, pick up a few threads of the fabric in the center of each dot.

3. Pause every so often to draw the thread up tighter, smoothing and straightening the origami-like folds as they form.

4. Optionally, iron the folded figure when you're done.

That's all it takes; and if you work the project in a crisper fabric than the sample items Amazon shows as secondary images, the results are as precise as Moorish tiling patterns.

Shadowfolding! Wow!

If you like geometric patterns and you like fabric art, you will love this book. The projects are beautiful and the design options are endless. I am really inspired by what can be acheived with these fabric folding techniques. I love the dimension and texture that fabric folding adds to any project. I plan on incorporating these techniques into my art quilts. What fun!

It's "wonderfold"!!!!

I met Chris Palmer once many many years ago at an origami convention in NYC. I was in awe at that time of his beautiful paper geometric origami designs...amazing to see in person...even more amazing to see them in fabric and so marvelously presented in this book. The book itself is a work of art. AND, the projects that the authors/artists include appear to be very achievable. The technique as described looks like a most enjoyable game of "connect the dots" with a most beautiful end result. This book will appeal to origami enthusiasts and quilters or fabric artists alike. Simply "wonderfold"!

A comparative analysis of cities

Lewis Mumford deftly explores the formation and development of the city from its early Mesopotamian and Egyptian roots to its modern day manifestations. It is the logical extension of his earlier works on the subject, in particular "The Culture of Cities," which has been partially absorbed into this volume. Of particular interest to meis his analysis of the walled versus open cities, and the sharply opposing world views of the progenitors of these cities.
Mumford was particularly drawn to the early Hellenic and later medieval town planning ideals. He noted how the early cities knew their limits, and established satellite communities, rather than continually extend their boundaries. Loose-knit federations were formed, which were much more democratic than were the Roman and Baroque regimental cities.
He charts the evolution of modern city planning ideals, very critical of Le Corbusier's "Radiant City" and other megalomaniac ideas which arose in the 20th century. Mumford favored the "garden city" ideals of Ebeneezer Howard, which recognized the destructive impact of industrialization on urban centers; rather than those schemes which extolled the industrial city as the city of the future.
Mumford is careful not to over reach, or at least let you know when he is forming suppositions. His annotated bibliography is immense, and probably the single most compelling aspect of this book for those who want to read more on the subject. The new Harcourt paperback edition, which came when I ordered this volume, has a more handsome cover than that shown in this listing.

A must read book!

I couldn't find this book in Europe. They told me that it was finished it would never be reprinted again!
When I had the chance to buy it form Amazon, I took it in a minute!
Mumford's opinion for the "City" is so clear and yet so original that even people with no scientific intrest in this book, will enjoy reading it.
He has wonderful examples and detailed studies on the history of cities starting from Egypt, Greece Rome and Middle Ages.
Its a unique historical work that everybody should have it in their library!

This book reveals the Ancient Egyptian roots of Christianity, both historically and spiritually. This book consists of three parts to coincide with the terms of trinity. The first part demonstrates that the major biblical ancestors of the biblical Jesus are all Ancient Egyptian prominent characters. The second part demonstrates that the accounts of the historical Jesus are based entirely on the life and death of the Egyptian Pharaoh, Twt/Tut-Ankh-Amen. The third part demonstrates that the Jesus of Faith and the Christian tenets are all Egyptian in origin such as the essence of the teachings/message, the creation of the universe and man (according to the Book of Genesis), as well as the religious holidays.

Moustafa Gadalla is a native Egyptian and an independent Egyptologist, and the author of twelve internationally acclaimed books about Egypt. He is also the chairman of the Tehuti Research Foundation, dedicated to the study of Ancient Egypt.

I Never Write Reviews...

In fact I rarely read books cover to cover. But I just had to write a review this time. This book was so compelling and fascinating and well supported I literally could not put it down. I read it cover to cover in one sitting. If you want to understand more about this topic, THIS IS A MUST! There are a couple of dry parts that I attribute to the author thoroughly explaining topics with supporting evidence. You will find that devout Christians will bash books like this and rush to offer 1 star reviews never having bought the book or read any part of it. TRUST ME - That is all the more reason to get this book.

In "The Ancient Egyptian Roots Of Christianity", Gadalla connects certain historical and spiritual aspects of Christianity to their roots in Ancient Egypt including the prominent ancestors (Moses, David, and Solomon) of the historical Jesus, Christian tenants of the early church; the names Christ, Mary, Lazarus, and others; the creation story as set down in the Book of Genesis; and such Christian concepts as Christmas, epiphany, Last Supper; Easter, transfiguration, and more. This prolific author, head of his own foundation, writes consistently crazy books that lack support. This one is no exception, but it is highly amusing. You will not be convinced of his argument. You will be entertained.
