Wreckers of Civilisation: The Story of Coum Transmissions & Throbbing Gristle, by Simon Ford

This text tells the story of two interconnected groups: the performance art group COUM Transmissions (1969-1979) and the music group, Throbbing Gristle (1975-1981). COUM shocked art audiences with their public nudity and often masochistic art actions. TG likewise shocked music audiences with their sonic terrorism and explicit lyrics. The book documents both group's work and places it in the context of avant-gardism and permissiveness.

From Library Journal
Beware of post-postmodern types name-dropping COUM and Throbbing GristleTM as the proud parents of industrial music and industrial bands like Nine Inch Nails; that's the half-assed version to expect from people who think they invented black. Here, Ford shows the patience and respect of an extragenerational fan while detailing the frenetic evolution of COUM from a hippie freak-out band to a performance art troupe to TG, an anti-rock, anti-high art missionary. Although TG's attacks on social, political, sexual, musical, and artistic mores were brave, they often bordered on the hypocriticalAe.g., TG desired intimacy with its audience but used halogen lights and P.A. barricades to alienate people at live shows. Using his interviews with Chris Carter, Peter Christopherson, Genesis P-Orridge, and Cosey Fanni Tutti, Ford convincingly defends TG on every frontAincluding its use of fascist album imageryAand proves that COUM and TG elevated civilization more than they wrecked it. A dense but enlightening work; for larger public libraries.AHeather McCormack, "Library Journal"

An Awesome History on the pioneers of Industrial Culture
By Mithras "Unconquerable Sun" Sol Invictus
This book was a great introduction to the artistic exploits of
the controversial performance group Coum Transmissions. Although I was familiar with Throbbing Gristle since high-school, I had not heard of Coum before. It was fascinating how Coum transformed into the pioneers of industrial culture:Throbbing Gristle. T.G. stood out even amongst the explosive punk scene that was born as a reaction to the grim and gritty Thatcher years. They were even too radical for most punks. Well written and compelling, it contains some amazing background information into their method and madness. If you are interested in industrial culture, analog technology, art or music of the seventies, magick,or simply have a morbid curiosity then this book is for you.One of the best art/music books that I have read in a long time with lot's of great and rare photos. One particular side effect of reading this book was that i developed a fascination for front man Genesis P. Orridge and I encourage everyone to investigate and acquaint themselves with this cultural engineer who played a major role in introducing not only 'industrial' music but also body modification, rave culture, and magick to the public. As a result of reading Wrecker's I am now totally absorbed in Gen's Psychick Bible which I also highly recommend.

Wreckers of Civilisation
By K Lee
This book will provide plenty of insight for any enthusiast who desires more context in which to understand the motives behind TG.

Plenty of back story illuminates the early adventures of a couple of nutty kids in love as they parlay their penchant for mischief into successful anti-careers. Join two art damaged acid-heads as they learn how to navigate the sexual/socio/political spectrum of 1970s England while utilizing confrontational happenings in a bid to transcend physical and mental hang ups; all the while petitioning the British arts counsel to fund their next performance art piece which sought to provoke enough outrage to dismantle the very system that kept Genesis in Porridge. When the authorities finally had enough they took him to court and withdrew funding for his Cotex chewing exhibitions. Once the arts funding dried up Cosey Fanni Tutti turned to pornography to pay the bills and Gen decided to form another band with the guy that did record sleeves for Pink Floyd. In the end it was plain old relationship issues – jealousy - that precipitated the decay. These guys were the Fleetwood Mac of Industrial Noise. God bless 'em.

Teaching High School Physics Volume III, by Carl J. Wenning, Rebecca E. Vieyra

Written by physics teachers for physics teachers, Teaching High School Physics provides the dual perspectives of a highly experienced physics teacher educator with a distinguished high school physics teacher. A mix of theory and practice, this 3-volume series provides rigorous and systematic treatments of 40 important topics. While intended to serve as a textbook for teacher candidates, this series is suitable for even experienced in-service physics teachers who seek a reference guide to the many topics being addressed in today’s teaching reform movement.

Teaching High School Physics is based on the premise that teachers need to be educated rather than merely “trained” to do their jobs effectively. This belief permeates this series and helps to form substantive and substantiated belief systems that will serve as the underpinnings of a new way to teach. This publication promotes an inquiry-oriented approach to physics teaching, and provides a wide array of resources for doing so. The authors’ Levels of Inquiry Model of Science Teaching theme permeates the series, and serves as the basis for many of the examples provided.

The subject matter of this work runs the gambit from becoming a teacher through student teaching, the first year of teaching, and ongoing professional development. The subject matter deals not only with the topic of physics teaching, but also teacher needs and student difficulties. Topics range from teaching philosophies to scientific epistemology, from levels of inquiry to scientific reasoning, from classroom management to instructional technology, from inquiry-oriented instruction to assessing and evaluating, and from school students to school settings. While the topics included in these three volumes are numerous and varied, all are treated in considerable depth. Each volume is based upon both general education and physics education research, and addresses national standards.

These volumes were written by a father-daughter team. Carl J. Wenning was director of the Physics Teacher Education program at Illinois State University (1994-2008); Rebecca E. Vieyra was a high school teacher from 2007-2014. Detailed information about the authors and Teaching High School Physics, Volumes I, II, and III, can be found through the authors’ website https://sites.google.com/site/teachinghighschoolphysics/

A confusing look at the 1920's
By Sally O'Rourke
It would be fair of me to make a confession before I begin: I was assigned to read "The Perils of Prosperity" for my American History class. I have enjoyed many books I have read for school, but this is not one of them.
In this book, Leuchtenburg brings up things he describes as important events, yet he never explains them. For example, the execution of Nurse Edith Cavell is mentioned twice, yet he never bothers to tell who executed her or why she was executed.
Leuchtenburg often refers to people by their full name only once in a whole twenty-page chapter, so that a reader is left wondering exactly who Leuchtenburg is talking about. This gets especially confusing considering that there are multiple Bryans (William Jennings and Charles) and multiple Smiths (Alfred E. and Jesse), and although it is unlikely confuse the two Smiths (Jesse Smith committed suicide before Alfred E. Smith even ran for the presidency), it makes one wonder whether there is a third person of the same last name. Leuchtenburg's infrequent use of full names also led me to know major players only by their last name; I didn't know Clemenceau's first name was Georges until I looked it up in the book's index.
Fortunately, most of these problems only occured in the first half or so of the book. By the time of the last five chapters, Leuchtenburg began to make himself clearer and his writing became more focused. It also helped, I must admit, that his subject matter in these chapters became more interesting--the Roaring Twenties, the "monkey trial", and the stock market crash of 1929.

I suppose that people who are already familiar with this era might enjoy the book. But if you are like me, a student or someone else trying to learn new information about the 1920's, this book is not your best choice. I often could not understand things in "The Perils of Prosperity" until after I read them in my textbook.

Excellent introductory study of the 1920s
By David Montgomery
Periodization in history is frequently tenuous at best. This is especially true when dealing with such loose categories as "the Twenties," a term signifying much more than a mere decade. William Leuchtenburg has taken this task to heart, though. He has written an entertaining and insightful history of the United States during this period, with a few years added on either end for context.
The title is, unfortunately, somewhat misleading. The "perils of prosperity" indicates a much grander theme than Leuchtenburg has undertaken. He makes scant effort to link the prosperity that the nation enjoyed until 1929 with many of the sub-themes he discusses in the book (e.g., the rejection of the League of Nations, the Red Scare, the "revolution in morals"). He does point out what he perceives as the pitfalls of prosperity, however. It concentrated power in the hands of a "business class with little tradition of social leadership" and invested world power in a country unwilling and unable to accept it. Most importantly, "it made money the measure of man."
Leuchtenberg makes a solid argument connecting America's entrance into World War I with her affluence. Between 1914 and 1916, American trade with the Allies nearly quadrupled from $825 million to $3.2 billion. When faced with the threat of unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans-and the potential loss of billions in trade-America had no choice but to declare war. (He does not suggest that this was the only reason, but it was a compelling one.)
Leuchtenburg also convincingly links American prosperity in the 1920s with the crash of 1929 and the depression that followed. This was a decade dominated by "get-rich-quick" schemes and rags-to-riches millionaires. This phenomenon was most evident in the stock market. Stories abounded of men who had parlayed their savings into riches, multiplying their money hundreds of times. Indeed, in 1928 alone, the New York Stock Exchange registered sales of over one billions shares, a fourfold increase over the level of 1923. That same year industrial stocks gained 86.5 points. According to Leuchtenberg, this wave of speculation was crucial for the nation's continuing prosperity. In fact, he believes that "by 1928 the stock market was carrying the economy." A year later, of course, that was all to end.
Also important in the book is the theme of transition. The 1920s were a time of fundamental change in American society. Prior to that, the nation was a predominantly rural, agricultural society that placed great emphasis on tradition, religion, and basic values. It was to quickly transform into one that was urban, industrial, secular, and thoroughly modern in its culture, outlook, and morality. This was not an easy transition either. Many Americans fought it tooth and nail, reluctant (or, perhaps, unable) to accept the new reality of life in the United States. This created conflicts-particularly between rural and urban attitudes-that were especially prevalent in such issues as immigration, prohibition, and the presidential elections.
Leuchtenberg's approach is primarily social and political. He views the period with a detached eye, seeking neither to defend nor vilify the Twenties. Due to the restrictions of space, his treatment is necessarily brief and generalized in areas. Overall, however, The Perils of Prosperity is an invaluable contribution to the literature.

Scandals and Speakeasies
By A Customer
I had to read this book for my American History Since 1877 course. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed reading this book. I thought I knew about the 1920's, and after reading this book I knew that I knew nothing at all.
This book covers ever aspect of the decade and gives it more than just a name. The book covers political, economic, and social issues of the day. It explains the state of the nation in the previous decade as well to give us better understanding of what was to come at the decades end.
The book was also easy to understand and did not try to overcompensate with formal language. Anyone could understand the messages conveyed.
Overall I enjoyed this book and would read it again just to enjoy it.

A satisfying read until the last line.
By Novel Teen
Katie Parker's past closes in on her in The Big Picture, Jenny B. Jones' final volume of A Katie Parker Production. Katie's mom gets out of rehab and wants Katie back. The Scotts drive Katie out to Middleton, Texas, to her mother's mobile home and her new life--or old life, depending on how things go. Katie leaves the Scotts, her best friend, Francis, and her boyfriend, Charlie, and sets forth on a new journey, hoping her mom is ready to make their family work.

From the start tensions are high between Katie and her mom. Katie often finds herself home alone when her mom disappears for days at a time, even missing the social worker's visit. Katie wants her mom to make this work, but she isn't making it a priority. Nor is Charlie making their long-distance friendship a priority, despite his claims to care about her. Katie finds in instant friend in Tate Matthews, who goes out of his way to make Katie feel at home in Middleton. When the situation with her mom escalates and becomes dangerous, Katie is forced to make some hard decisions that will affect her future forever.

This book is a wonderful end to the trilogy. I was concerned about Katie not being with her In Between friends for most of the book, but Tate Matthews was a wonderful surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed his character. My only disappointment was the absence of letters from Katie to Mrs. Smartly, which were my favorite parts of the previous two books. Still, a satisfying read until the last line, The Big Picture shows that happily ever after isn't always perfect, but a girl can get through it with the GOG (grace of God). Highly recommended.

If you haven't read them, you must read books one and two:
In Between: A Katie Parker Production Act 1 and On the Loose: A Katie Parker Production, Act 2

The Big Picture is a Big Winner!!
By Betsy Ann St. Amant
Katie Parker is a riot! A realistic, relatable, sarcastic, hilarious girl on the verge of adulthood and all the issues that come with. The best part about Katie is EVERYONE gets her - young teens, college students, moms, middle-aged women, even grannies can relate to something in Katie's life. In fact, one of my favorite characters was Mad Maxine, Katie's crazy foster grandma who gets into more trouble than Katie herself.

I would recommend this series (please, go back and read them in order!) to any teen girl. They're fresh, fun, and full of inspiring themes that don't preach, but rather give subtle undertones of faith. Katie is real - it was hard to put this last book in the series down. I want to save them and let my daughter read them one day. (Okay, so she'll have to wait about 12 years, but hey!) =)

Very Good
By Machigua
This book, while very good, was not as excellent as the first two. It was somewhat ruined for me by the Spoiler that was written at the end of Book 2 - "Can't Let You Go" - which starts out with Katie at 23 years of age. What happened during the years from 17 to 23? I hope that Ms. Jones will write one more in this series to cover those years, although I can't seem to find out if she plans on doing so since she doesn't answer her requests for information. Kind of sad that an author will not answer a question from one of her readers, especially since said question pertains a future book in a series.

From Publishers Weekly
This breezy and entertaining book provides a look at how advertising on America's most watched television program-the Super Bowl-has changed over the past 36 years. Kanner, former "On Madison Avenue" columnist for New York magazine, offers delightful tidbits about the commercials, the products and the executives responsible for choosing the ads. Who would believe that there were some 30,000 unsold seats at the first Super Bowl, in 1967, and 60-second spots sold for less than $100,000? Today, with more than 750 million viewers around the world, advertisers pay more than $2 million for 30-second spots. Presenting anecdotes about the ads along with illustrations, Kanner takes readers through time as she discusses such classic lines as "Schaefer is the one beer to have when you're having more than one" and "take it all off" in reference to Noxzema shaving cream. In an amusing piece, "Fossil Fuel," Kanner recounts a popular animated commercial that occurs inside a natural history museum at night: "The bones of a giant tyrannosaurus stir to life, awakened by the intoxicating smell of McDonald's fries. The T-rex sets off to find them. When a dozing guard realizes that Dino wants his dinner, he playfully makes it do tricks, doling out fries as training bait." Particularly insightful is "the dot-com bowl" chapter about the 2000 game. Several Internet companies spent millions of their IPO money on their ads-in vain, as the corporations were out of business by the end of the year. General business readers as well as industry insiders will appreciate the behind-the-scenes look at their world.

A Wonderful Gift for Those Who Love Advertising!
By Donald Mitchell
Advertising is very difficult to do well. Ask anyone who has tried, and they will tell you.
Once a year the American part of the advertising world comes together to display its finest efforts . . . all in the same program, the Super Bowl. What have been the high and low points of these efforts? Why did this event end up being so important to advertisers and their agencies? Those are but some of the questions this fine book will answer.
In my family, the men watch the Super Bowl for the football and the women watch for the advertisements. In past years, I have attended many Super Bowls (where the fans don't usually see the ads) and often wondered why everyone was talking so much about the advertisements during the following days. Having now seen some of the efforts that I had missed, I better understand why some watch the ads for fun.
The book is organized around telling the story of how advertising developed in the Super Bowl. This task is accomplished from a historical perspective, from looking at categories of ads (soft drinks, beer, cars, athletic footwear, food, and financial services), ways of advertising (sex-related stories, animals and by trying to steal attention from the Super Bowl), and major advertisers who have had a big influence on the game's reputation for ads (Apple, Budweiser, Pepsi). In the historical section, much more attention is paid to recent years than the early ones, and you will hear a lot about dot-com companies flopping at the Super Bowl.
In the best of these stories, you get lots of large, full-color stills from the ads, discussions of how the ads were selected, and information about how the advertiser's business fared after the Super Bowl compared to the cost of the ads. Getting permission for all of these stills must have been a brutish task. I spent months just getting permission for one still in a book that I co-authored.
I would be very surprised if a better book is written anytime soon on this subject. The only unavoidable disappointment was that the book was written before the Janet Jackson incident at the 2004 Super Bowl. That would have provided lots of meat for discussion. My avoidable disappointments were that the book didn't provide more detail about the best advertising campaigns that were launched at the Super Bowl and how the success of the ads was affected by the quality of the game.
At another level, this book will appeal to older readers as a sort of walk down memory lane as you recall your life when you first saw these games and these ads. For younger readers, it will be like a glance into a museum to see how much communications have shifted in just a few decades.

Super facts between Super Bowl Sunday snaps!
By Stan Hudy
"The Super Bowl of Advertising" recounts the successes, miracles and flops from all 37 Super Bowls not from the couch, but from inside the advertising agencies that created the spots and the companies that footed the multi-million dollar bills.
"The Super Bowl of Advertising," brings out little-known facts about Super Bowl Sunday besides the cost-per-second of commercials over the years.
Kanner's work, like advertising, is all about presentation as "The Super Bowl of Advertising," with its 6x9 size and use of glossy white pages, filled with video stills of commercials allow the memories of those 30-second sellers to be recalled with ease.
"The Super Bowl of Advertising," is a trip down advertising's memory lane.
Coca-Cola's "I'd like to teach the world to sing," debuted during Super Bowl VI followed by Mean Joe Greene's change of heart after a cold Coke at Super Bowl VII.
McDonald's "You Deserve a Break Today" was seen in 1971 with the accompanying music and jingle from Barry Manilow. The golden arches tounge-twister about its Big Mac ingredients was first heard in 1974.
In 1977, Brother Dominick provided 500 more copies for the abbot utilizing the newly innovative Xerox Copiers with the tag line, "It's a miracle."
1984 the year and the book by George Orwell created a wave that every ad agency wanted to ride and companies wanted to emulate.
The Apple Computer commercial, directed by Ridley Scott, shattered the minds of advertisers and viewers when an athletic blonde hurdles a sledgehammer at the screen, tinted blue, exploding and announcing that Apple Computer will introduce the Macintosh later that week. The ad ran only once, didn't even show the product but it was played again and again on network television, morning shows and still registers today with viewers.
In the 1990's advertisers were forced to decide on what way to approach their viewers as the Gulf War broke out prior to Super Bowl XXIV. While Coca-Cola went patriotic, Diet Pepsi went with "The Right One, Baby!" with Ray Charles and the Uh-Huh Girls.
No advertising book would be complete without paying homage to the King of Beers, Budweiser, and its numerous memorable spots on Super Sunday.
From Clydesdales, to frogs, to lizards, to copiers, catch phrases and the "Bud Bowl" "The Super Bowl of Advertising," describes how Anheuser-Busch became the King of Super Sunday.
Not to be forgotten is the dot.com craze, ads and even faster bust with only Monster.com and HotJobs.com surviving the blitz of 2001.
If you watched it on Super Sunday, like it or even hated it, "The Super Bowl of Advertising" is a quick look back at the action off the gridiron and many of the memories that have stayed with us when the final scores may have faded from memory.

The Greatest Television Advertising Book ever Published!
By Steven Dworman
As a former Adweek Magazine suppliment publisher, I can say without a doubt that if you have any interest in television advertising, commercials, and their results-or even just heading down a nostalgia path, this book is the greatest book ever published on it's subject.
Inside it's pages are filled with full color photographs of the most important television spots in the past 20 years.
But even more important, Ms. Kanner's insightful writing gives us the inside stories of how these spots were created and what happened when they were aired. The background and inside information she's uncovered is invaluable for anyone interested in this field.
If you want to own one book on television advertising, this is the new bible!

From Publishers Weekly
Fifty years after he was given his first book, Tales from the Arabian Nights, consummate traveler and Monty Python founding member Palin trekked to Francophone Africa, believing that the Sahara embodies "the thin line between survival and destruction, the power to take life or to transform it." Fortunately for his readers, the Sahara seems to have transformed Palin (Around the World in 80 Days, Full Circle). This tie-in to the Bravo series airing in April consists of Palin's journal entries, full of his trademark self-deprecating humor (writing about the far-removed city of Djenne, which a British tour group nonetheless infiltrated, Palin confesses that "I know I shouldn't feel this way, but when I'm asked if I've ever been to Stoke-on-Trent all my romantic illusions of desert travel begin to wilt"). But Palin is also a piquant political observer (he notes that African women may be "by nature more direct, more open, more honest and considerably less submissive than their menfolk expect them to be"), and the Sahara's exoticism frequently inspires him to craft beautiful descriptions (the bizarre "battleship-grey" baobab trees "look like some prehistorical arboreal throwback, gnarled and twisted like old prize-fighters"). Readers looking for engaging, detailed insight to the Sahara will hit paydirt here, although newcomers to Palin's work may find themselves dismayed by his ubiquitous appearance in the photographs that dot nearly every page of this book. 175 color and b&w photos.

Wonderful Stuff. Palin is brilliant.
By Amazon Customer
This is truly exceptional. It was a wonderful TV series, and the book adds detail that they couldn't squeeze into the episodes, as well as more of Palin's wonderfully wry sense of humour. If you like travel books, or you like books about other cultures, or you just like a good non-fiction read - you could certainly do a hell of a lot worse than this one.

Seriously, someone needs to find a way to get Michael Palin and David Attenborough to breed. That is probably about the only way anyone is going to come up with a better documentary.

It took me back.
By Darcy Hoover
Having spent over a year travelling and living through most of Palin's Sahara route, I am very impressed with how he captured the magic of the area. Mr. Palin is funny, respectful and insightful. A very enjoyable read that took me back to the desert.

Palin's simple writing tries spurs readers to travel
By Kevin E Cain
My opinion is no doubt colored by my experience in the Sahara, but I found Michael Palin's itinerary an excellent one. This is a travelogue with often excellent photos, not a scholarly book, but the author's approach is quite winning, if sometimes a bit superficial.
