The Authority

Although most of the hunts O'Connor writes about could not be done today because the wild places he hunted are pretty much tame now, he does take us on one adventure after another. This book is better than any of the African hunting volumes I have read to date. It resides in a prominent position next to my "reading" chair and fireplace. This is THE classic everyone talks about when they mention classics. If you are lucky enough to find one in good shape, count your blessings and enjoy it. I miss the days when writer's like O'Connor and Carmichael wrote real and objective stories.

I subscribe to none of the modern outdoor magazines. Modern hunting writers write advertising copy pretty much. I prefer to read real stories from men who have actually done that and who are not trying to sell you something you really didn't need to hunt. Alas, we can only find that now in old books.

Another brutal, gory and sexy comic book collection about crooks and the underworld.

Reminiscent of his run on Daredevil, Ed Brubaker brings us inter-related stories of drug barons, small-time crooks and the criminal world. A lot of sex, dead bodies, beatings and maimings ensue.

The artwork and story-writing are powerful and I’d recommend this to all lovers of crime stories.

Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips Continue to Amaze

I'm on a tear reading through Brubaker and Phillips' Criminal graphic novel series. I just finished volume three, The Dead and the Dying, which varies the regular format by presenting an anthology of three interrelated character study/stories. Brubaker is amazing in the way that he develops fully developed (and often sympathetic) characters in just a few pages. The Dead and the Dying is no exception as it gives us a boxer sucked into the world of crime, a war veteran who finds true brutality on the home front, and a woman who makes bad choices in men and life.
Highly recommended for gritty stories and tough-as-nails art.

About the Author
Beverly Kirkpatrick (Port St. Lucie, FL) has worked with AutoCAD for over 30 years in Interior Design and Education. In the interior design field she was employed to do interior design, space planning and finish schedules for commercial projects such as elementary schools, banks, hospitals, churches, and car dealerships. She held the titles of Interior Designer, Project Manager and Design Director. She has taught AutoCAD in both community colleges and high schools. She is the co-author of AutoCAD for Interior Design and Space Planning which was published first in 1992.  

James Kirkpatrick (Port St. Lucie, FL) has worked with AutoCAD for over 40 years. He started his drawing career as a design drafter and technical illustrator. He has taught AutoCAD in community colleges and industry. James is the founder of a cooperative education program at El Centro College and began the AutoCAD Training Center at Eastfield College. He was the CAD Program Chair for 30 years and recently retired from full-time teaching. He is the author and co-author of over 30 books on drafting and design. James holds BIA, MEd and EdD degrees.

Hossein Assadipour (Upper Montclair, NJ) is a CAD expert and has been teaching for over 30 years. He is currently Professor in the Engineering Technology & Computer Science Department at Essex County College, an adjunct professor in the Engineering & Computer Science Department at New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) in Newark, NJ; and adjunct faculty in the Math & Computer Science Department at Rutgers University. He teaches courses in CAD, CNC, CAM, Manufacturing Materials & Processes, and Robotics.  He is the author of Learning AutoCAD in 20 Projects and Learning MicroStation in 20 Projects with West Educational Publishing.

About the Author
Sam Carrington lives in Devon with her husband and three children. She worked for the NHS for 15 years, during which time she qualified as a nurse. I was actually really looking forward to reading this book. It sounded like exactly the kind of story I love, a "gripping psychological thriller" (although I do hate it when they put it in the title) but unfortunately in this instance it failed to deliver for me.
So the book blurb intrigued me and the social media buzz about it was considerable, but it wasn't far into the story that the problems become apparent. First, most of the dialogue doesn't ring true, and characters ask themselves dozens upon dozens upon dozens of introspective questions, which was a very odd technique employed by the author and slowed the book down in my opinion.
That being said the premise of this book is a good one. Your daughter is brought home one night by the police and she can’t remember anything that happened the night before past a certain point. The police had found her wandering around an area not usually frequented by her or her friends and mumbling incoherently. One of Sophie’s friends is missing and she isn’t being very helpful to her parents or the police. Does she know what happened? Is she hiding something from her parents?, the police?
This is the story of a mother and daughter who basically make all of the wrong choices right from the beginning of this incident. Sophie’s mother, Karen, is basically home bound after suffering an attack herself some time in the past. She is an emotional wreck and doesn’t know how to deal with her daughter or her husband for that matter. You would think that between the mother, father and daughter one of them would come to the conclusion that calling the police is the right thing to do, but that isn’t the case.
I’m starting to think that maybe I’ve just read way too many really well executed psychological thrillers so it’s rare that I’m truly gripped and horrified. While there were certain aspects of Saving Sophie that I liked, I had just as many overall issues. I will say that I would be interested in seeing what Sam Carrington writes next and that I can definitely see the appeal for some people. For me it's probably a 2.5 stars but I'll give it 3 stars as it's a debut and I love supporting authors.

Middling plot and writing

I've read many a thriller and this one was more disappointing than gripping. The plot did have many a twist and a turn, but it felt contrived rather than artful and truly suspenseful. The characters were one-dimensional, although I did appreciate the creative changes in narrator and point of view to introduce the main twist.

A Gripping Disaster

This convoluted plot is filled with the most dysfunctional characters who, faced with common sense, always choose complete stupidity. The key description for this book is "Depressing". An agoraphobic mother with a daughter whose best friend is murdered tries to "protect" her daughter from a murderer by doing what? Lying to the police? Lying to her husband? Are all English family dynamics this wretched? The unsatisfying ending leaves you with so many questions. The main one being "Did the author lose her pen and just give up on the ending and walk away?" This book is soul-less. Walk away from it.

Very well written, easy to follow for non-Kashmiris

I am very pleased with this purchase. I looked at a few recipes for dishes that I am already good at and the recipes here made total sense, this gives me confidence to try some new recipes. It is easy to see the effort that has gone into writing this book and why it is so popular. More than half the food I cook is already Kashmiri but I am looking forward to surprising my husband with (new to me) dishes that he should remember from his childhood in Srinagar. Our daughters already love Kashmiri food. I hope to use this book to get them to try cooking a few easy things on their own.

Easy and tasty Kashmiri Pandit cooking

I am a Kashmiri Pandit that has lived in the US for a decade and never cooked our ethnic food as I thought it was tedious and required more than the basic training my parents gave me.This book made the difference.I now try a recipe every now and then .Simple,authentic and delicious.Particularly easy to get ingredients since she gives American/international names .

A must buy !!!

If Kashmiri cuisine were a subject, this book deserves to be the required text ! It arrived yesterday and I am speechless after reading it. To call it a book is an understatement. Going through the first few pages itself shows the pains that the author has gone through, to make the reader well versed with everything associated with Kashmiri cuisine. From the Kashmiri, Hindi and English names of vegetables, utensils, spices to the detailed description on peeling and washing certain items( with pictures!) this book is a dummy's guide to Kashmiri cooking. While one may find many books with Kashmiri cuisine this book's USP lies in the way it connects you to the Kashmiri culture. There are details of the occasions on which particular dishes are prepared and even recommendations on where to buy certain vegetables (outside India). I didn't know I could actually find sotchal at a korean store! My cousin is getting married this year and is going to move to UK. Needless to say this book goes with her. I am sure she would thank me more than her own mother!

Thankyou Mrs Ganju for this wonderful book. Although I feel that the exteriors of the book (cover, pictures, paper/font etc) could have been much better...I am sure its unmatchable when it comes to the content!!
