Albert Camuswas born in Algeria in 1913. During World War II, he joined the Resistance movement in Paris, then became editor-in-chief of the newspaper Combat during the Liberation. A novelist, playwright, and essayist, he is most famous for his novels The Stranger and The Plague. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957.

Absolute horrible version of a great collection

Horrible copy of an awesome collection of essays. This is clearly someone who made the book themselves using Amazon's Createspace book service. First off, the cover is highly pixelated & the Text format inside is horrible. One of the pages stops mid-sentence, mid-page & continues on the next page. Just horrible.

Do not recommend this version

When I got this I thought I'll just get the cheap version cause who cares what the cover looks like as long as the content is there

I guess I got what I paid for, the cover image is low quality and the formatting of the text inside is kind of awkward even though I dont really mind.
What got me was the translation, it's weird and has a lot of typos and its almost like a literal translation, it's unreadable for me. The syntax is off.

A classic work in existentialism

Albert Camus was a French existentialist philosopher of the 20th century who was highly intelligent and wrote some fantastic books in his time.
The Myth of Sisyphus is obviously a classic in philosophical literature and in my opinion this work is one of the most thought provoking books in recent times. The books theme heavily revolves around this quote from Camus:

"There is but only one truly serious philosophical problem, and that is suicide. Judging whether life is or is not worth living amounts to answering the fundamental question of philosophy."

Albert Camus contended one must rebel against the logical conclusion on an existential and practical basis. This makes a lot of sense in a universe where philosophical naturalism is presupposed to be true, therefore he was honest that it was impossible to live as if moral nihilism was true. It would mean that one could only accept personal concerns for matters but no longer be able to argue for any rightness or wrongness about any significant matters due to the fact that one could not account for values or meaning beyond one's only subjective account. This is a case where prudential value and moral value come into conflict.

This quote also has much relevance with respect to the book:

"Hence the intelligence...tells me in its way that this world is absurd. Its contrary, blind reason, may well claim that all is clear...But despite so many pretentious centuries and over the heads of so many eloquent and persuasive men, I know that is false"

Absurdity is a topic that is touched upon in this book. Albert Camus goes into this subject of absurdity and speaks about Sisyphus who is known in Greek mythology as someone who lived a life that entailed pointless meaning, as he was subject to endlessly repeating the steps of rolling a boulder up a hill, only to see it roll down again. This essay concludes with statements in respect to the absurdity of man finding his purpose, meaning and unity in life. Albert Camus finishes with what he perceives is the best way to handle this outcome, and that is through `revolt'.

This oversized, coffee-table volume is devoted to the industrial design of every product made at Apple Computer over the course of 20 years. Lavishly illustrated with over 400 large color photographs by photographer Rick English, the book transforms the plastic cases, LCD displays, and disk drives from old Apple IIcs, Lisas, Macs, PowerBooks, and Newtons (and a few technologies that never made it to the street) into objects of fine art. The book's attention to detail, even in the small peripherals, such as the stylus of the Newton--the ubiquitous round stick-on microphone that ships with the Mac--contributes to the technological identity of the Apple brand.

Remember that 20 years ago, when you walked into a campus computing center or office building, you could distinguish an Apple system from an IBM system from across a room. The early IBM PCs were box-shaped--as close to pure squares and rectangles as possible--and buttoned down with garters on the socks like the Big Blue executives who sold them to the world as business machines. In contrast, the physical design of the Apple machines has always represented the company's "alternative" (and borderline arrogant) mindset, appealing to the more artistic user and fueling the left-versus-right-brain debates. In addition to the packaging of the machine, the Mac's graphical user interface and Motorola CPUs provided the artistic cover by which this innovative book could safely be judged.

Today other computer companies casually imitate the technofuturistic curvedness of the once-almost-shocking Apple design. Much like how the set of the movie Blade Runner has influenced many films that followed it, the industrial design of Apple machines continues to shape other companies' computer designs. AppleDesign is interesting both as an historical document and an artistic appreciation of these designs.

A beautiful book, badly in need of an editor

This is a beautiful book showing the evolution of Apple's industrial design. Apple is the only company whose industrial design is worth such a book. The history is interesting, and it's fascinating to see how designs evolve.
There are two problems with this book which caused me to give it only 3 stars. The first is that it desperately needs a copy editor. The spelling and grammar errors would be unacceptable from a college freshman. Several times, a reference to a picture gives the wrong plate number. I expect much better from a book on excellent design.
A minor gripe is that it's not clear who the intended audience is. Some technical terms are defined (though for the lay audience it would help to have a couple of pictures to illustrate terms), but many are not. As a lay reader, there were ideas I just didn't get, even as I appreciated the beauty of the work they described.
If these two problems were fixed, I would give it 5 stars.

A very rare look into the Apple story...

This is a beautiful book. It had a short run, and copies are now very rare. It seems like it was too expensive for them to produce or something, but it's quite a book.

Yes, it could be edited a bit, but the photographs are the important part. Printing quality is wonderful--good enough to make high-quality scans (if you do that sort of thing).

This is an art book, NOT a history book.. The designs in this book are iconic, striking, and represent a fundamental change in the history of the computer industry.

A major disappointment after High Fidelity.

High Fidelity had one noxious weed in it: to turn the plot Hornby used the cliche that men have to grow up, and he used the fear of death to effect the change. Lame, but at least the weed was surrounded by a great and diverse forest. It was isolated and harder to see.

About a Boy lets that weed sprout over vast fields. Hornby preaches that weed. If you aint got a woman and arent intending to get some ballast and responsibility, well, pardner, you aint much of a man, yer a boy.

It's that bad, page after page. Oh, and don't forget death.

In High Fidelity I had the sense that our protagonist needed some detail in his life to keep from going under. About a Boy reveals an author who seems to earnestly believe that we all need a relationship and kids to keep us from being miserable failures. It's not only philosophically dubious, it's boring, it's stultifying.

My charitable reading: Hornby worked his ass off on High Fidelity, every sentence, every thought. He then made it big, and everyone wanted every word he had. He couldn't stop writing, and he was surrounded by yes men.

Very entertaining.

I have only become recently familiar with Mr. Hornby through the movie versions of "High Fidelity," and "About a Boy."
Based on all the reviews posted here, I realized that the book was probably a fuller version of the charecters in the Hugh Grant movie.
I won't bother to go into great detail about the book itself, as many others have done that already. Let me suggest that for someone who doesn't often read fiction, I find Hornby a really relevant and contemporary author, who actually is entertaining and has something to say.
In this book we meet two teenagers, Will Freeman a 35 year old man, who lives off the royalities of a song his father wrote, and Marcus, a misfit teenager who is misunderstood at school, and is mothered by a suicidal hippie - Fiona. Will lives the kind of life all teenagers wish they could have, but at Will's actual age realize that his life is empty and devoid of meaning.
Marcus is just clueless and his move to a new school has brought many unhappy things to his life, except for Will.
Basically the story is about how the two 'boys' interact and mutually force each other to grow up. Will becomes a human being, and Marcus becomes a teenager. The story is hilarious, touching and worth reading even if you watch the movie. Further, after reading the book,I was able to appreciate the adaptation of the novel to the screen.
Hornby is very good at putting together chrarecters who are real people - perhaps people we may not want to meet ot actually get to know, but nonetheless, Hornby makes them breath. I could see that all the charecters in the book could actually exist.
In short, the book is very worth reading, even if you have seen the movie (the book does takes some surprising turns apart from the movie version), and these are people worth getting to know.

About a great book

Having watched the movie around seven months ago, I decided that reading the book upon which About a Boy is based would be a good idea. After all, the movie was good and the books are usually better than the movies, so what could go wrong. Happily, not much.
This novel is about two characters: Will and Marcus. Will is a shallow man who knows he is shallow and enjoys it immensely; thanks to an inheritance, he is financially independent, so he spends his days having fun and avoiding commitments. Marcus, on the other hand, is a twelve-year-old plaugued with a depressed mother and a school where he does not fit in. Will needs more depth in his life, and in ways, Marcus needs more shallowness. It is left to the reader to determine who is the boy in the title.
This is a funny book but it also has real heart. Done incorrectly, Will could come off unpleasant, but Hornby succeeds in making him likeable. Marcus could come off as pathetic, but he is definitely better than that. Since this story is character-driven (what plot there is exists only to further character development), it is essential to have interesting, multi-dimensional characters and this book has plenty of them. Even Will, who strives to be one dimensional, has more to himself than he would like to admit.
For those who have seen the movie, the first two-thirds of the book is very similar to the film; on the other hand, the last portion goes in a different but successful direction. Thus, whether you've seen the movie or not, this is a great read, fun from start to finish.

About the Author

Dr Gautam Mehta qualified from Southampton University in 2001 and underwent postgraduate training at Hammersmith, Royal Free, St Mary's, and Charing Cross Hospitals. He was the youngest appointee to the North West Thames Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine registrar rotation, and is currently a Wellcome Trust Research Fellow at the Institute of Hepatology, University College London.
Gautam is widely published and regularly teaches on MRCP PACES preparation courses. He has an extensive background in medical education, having completed a Fellowship in Medical Education with the London Deanery, and undertaking the Masters in Clinical Education programme at the Institute of Education. Gautam is also an examiner for medical finals at Barts & the London Medical School. Dr Bilal Iqbal is currently Specialist Registrar in Cardiology at Hammersmith Hospital, London.

Good clinical aid

This "Core clinical skills" was instrumental in guiding me during my Basic physician training in Adult Internal medicine.
I read it before and after my duties, cross-checking what I missed and revising what I knew.
By the end of my first three months, using this book, I didn't need it anymore as it had thought me the basics that i needed to know, to be a successful physician.
I also bought an extra copy and gave to a colleague who was struggling with his clinical exams. Looking forward to hearing of his success at the next clinical exams.

About the Author
Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. In 2005 he was awarded the Venice International Film Festival's Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement, and his Studio Ghibli received the festival's Osella Award for overall achievement in 2004. Miyazaki's films include Spirited Away, winner of the 2002 Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film, as well as Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Ponyo, all of which have received great acclaim in the U.S. Miyazaki's other achievements include the highly regarded manga series Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind and Starting Point: 1979-1996, a collection of essays, interviews, and memoirs that chronicle his early career and the development of his theories of animation. Both are published in English by VIZ Media.

Beautiful companion art book

[[VIDEOID:mo1FIN7XHG048ML]]This is a belated but welcome translation by publisher Viz Media of the original Japanese artbook The Art of The Princess Mononoke--もののけ姫. Princess Mononoke and and the accompanying artbook came out in 1997. By the way, that Japanese artbook is still being reprinted even after so many years.

I've reviewed the original Japanese artbook before, and also the other English edition by Miramax Books. There's no point getting those books now because one's in Japanese and the other is out of print. Viz Media's books are widely available.

The interior pages of this English edition is laid out exactly the same as the Japanese book, only the text have been replaced. One other difference is this book is a hardcover vs the textured dust jacket paperback Japanese edition. This 224-page hardcover has well reproduced pictures on low to no gloss paper. Very good.

The book starts off with a few poems and an introduction by Hayao Miyazaki before it goes into the concept art.

The concept art is a mixture of character designs, movie stills, environment art, storyboards and several computer animation screenshots. There are line drawings as well as the pencil and watercolour sketches of Hayao Miyazaki. There aren't many studios that still use watercolour sketches to create concept art nowadays so it's always refreshing to see the ones from Studio Ghibli. The sketches may look loose but they convey the action and settings clearly, and they look charming.

The environment art are by Kazuo Oga and some of his artworks have also appeared in 男鹿和雄画集II (Oga Kazuo Animation Artworks 2). There are a lot of background paintings and not one of them are credited so it's impossible to tell if they are all from Kazuo Oga.

Towards the back are three tutorials that look at how the film is made, such as the use of computers for compositing, colouring and backgrounds. That's followed by selected storyboards. Finally there's a 3-year production diary that records down the milestones and activities. Even things like Hayao Miyazaki going for his acupuncture sessions are also recorded. Amusing.

Just like other Studio Ghibli artbooks, this is a wonderful companion to the film. Highly recommended to fans of Princess Mononoke and Studio Ghibli.

I am quite a bit disappointed by this book. I like my art book with something substantial to read. It is obviously a personal preference, so many people will be perfectly fine with these Ghibli artbooks.

To me there are 2 main drawbacks of these books:

1. A huge amount of pages is dedicated to cel art, scene by scene. As another reviewer wrote, if I wanted photos of each movie scene, I would watch the movie instead. This leaves to less of a space for concept art, which is the most interesting to me.

2. Too less to read. There is only a few pages at the end about how the movie is made, and a small production diary. It is so less. You only get a few insights from Miyazaki himself here and there in the book. I just wish there was more to read, more about the creative process, more about the story, how the characters came to life. I do not feel I learned much about the movie after "reading" this book.

A disappointment for me in the end, but one which is due to personal preferences.

Hyperion version vs Viz version

I just wanted to write a quick blurb on this new Viz version in comparison to the old out of print Hyperion one. Do you need to buy this new Viz one if you have the old one? In a word, no. They are page-for-page identical with a few exceptions.

Hyperion:
Printed slightly differently, occasionally an image won't be as bright as the Viz version
Introduction by Mark Schilling (the translator)
Ghibli: Its past and present (speech by studio Ghibli president at the Annecy international animated film festival in 1995)
Ghibli Filmography

Viz:
Images are more saturated or vibrant, but sometimes makes pencil lines look too dark. Overall I only noticed it on about 5-10% of the images
Different cover, fits in better with the other 'art of' for Ghibli
Production diary
Different translation
ie. Princess Mononoke Poem Viz/Hyperion:
The trembling string of the taut bow / The quivering string of a fully drawn bow
Your heart gleams in the light of the moon / Your heart astir in the moonlight
The beauty of the keen-edged blade / Your beautiful face seen from the side
Your profile like the tip of the sword / Unforgiving as the edge of a just sharpened sword

Overall a wonderful artbook to have, either one is fine. I do think Viz made some of the text easier to understand what image it corresponded with in the CG section but it's not a huge difference.

Just about the book in general, it's got a lovely amount of production background, a copious amount of movie stills, some cel frames and sequences (about 30-32 pages), maybe 10 pages on the CG, character designs/sketches (but NOT full or final turn arounds!). What is sorely lacks is much insight into how this amazing, gripping story came to be or how the characters developed into what we see on the screen. I personally hate movie stills in art books (I could just watch the movie for that) but rather prefer the meat of what we DON'T see during the movie in these books. Ghibli has stunning backgrounds so I welcome images of those at any time, however. Personally, I may turn in my old copy for the new one eventually, simply because it will match my other Ghibli art books.
