Just for Fun

Now I can (and did) throw away my 70's Scott Joplin music book - you've seen it; the white one with the green stuff on it. When you tackle 'Classic Piano Rags,' don't get discouraged. If Classical is your thing (it's mine), you'll need to drop it for awhile and play strictly Ragtime. Don't read how other composers say you should play Ragtime; just sit down and play. But lay off the loud peddling, and don't fake the left hand.

Update. There are 360 pages of sheet music - listed alphabetically by composer. I just finally got through the last 1/3, and the songs just keep getting better (and more complicated, for whatever reason).

Not just Joplin

This marvelous collection is heavy on the Scott Joplin, of course, but also touches upon Arthur Marshall, James Scott, and Joe Lamb, along with most of the other ragtime suspects.

Anyone with more than a passing interest in ragtime should get this collection. I know of no other that covers ragtime as widely as this does, and at a nice price.

This book offers a wide range of music from some of the past great ragtimers. There is definitely something for everyone. Some of the songs iare written in very small print, which for many people will not work. Overall, for the price, I think I am getting a good value.

Highly Informative

The Birth of Vietnam by Keith Weller Taylor is a must read for those who are into Vietnamese history because it covers in depth the rise and fall of dynasties such as, the Hong Bang, Au Lac, Trieu Da, Trung, Ba Trieu, Ngo, and Dinh, though the Trung and Ba Trieu were more like brief insurgencies rather than dynasties, and also the Chinese dynasties in Vietnam such as, the Qin, Han, Tang, Liang, Sung, Yuan (Khubilai Khan Mongols), and Ming. It also covers empires such as Funan, Chenla, and Lin I later called Champa, and the flowering of Buddhism in Vietnam. And since so much research went into the book, it makes a must read for Vietnamese history enthusiasts.

This is, by far, the most authoritative work in English about the history of Vietnam from prehistory to 974 AD.
The Vietnamese (Lac people as they were called at the time) were part of the Dong Son civilization, which was characterized by its bronze drums depicting aquatic scenery. Over the years, they brought to the Asian culture the "pho", the "ao dai", various musical instruments, poetry, and so on.
But what defined the Vietnamese is their indomitable aspiration for freedom. They just wanted to be left alone, therefore, were not always seen as "actors", but "reactors" to events around them. Despite being dominated for along time by the Chinese and the French, they yearned to live in a free country.
Sandwiched between giant China in the north and the kingdoms of Champa and Khmer in the south, they knew a long time ago they were not Chinese and, therefore, refused to remain enslaved by them. The Trung sisters (see book of same name) revolted against the Chinese and reigned as the first and only Queens of Vietnam until 42 AD. Defeated by Ma Yuan, they fell back under Chinese influence until 939 AD until Ngo Quyen was brilliant enough to recover the country's independence.
The period covered by Taylor represented the difficult times the Lac people went through to mature into an organized society strong enough to free themselves from the Chinese. Besides the Trung Queens, many others had tried unsuccessfully over the years to free from the Chinese yoke. The birth of Vietnam was thus not a smooth and normal one: it was the result of a series of abortive rebellions until its final success in 939 AD.

Best work available in either English or VNese on this topic

I don't think one needs to engage in chest-thumping nationalism to praise Taylor's work. The book is a beautiful example of solid scholarship. Taylor uses both Chinese and Vietnamese primary sources and compares them to give a more realistic picture behind the nationalist myths that Vietnamese schoolchildren (both North and South) have been taught for decades. Taylor also draws upon a large body of secondary sources in Chinese, Vietnamese, French, English, and Japanese. I doubt that there is ANY scholarship on this period of Vietnamese history in either Vietnamese or English that is of a higher quality than this. A work of lucid writing founded on excellent research.

that this is NOT the original story needs to be made much clearer in the description - lots of issues when your student uses this book as their own in which to underline rather than the class copy in which they cannot underline - to find there are lots of differences! VERY disappointing

Great! Classic read with vocabulary component.

This is a great classic literature book and the vocabulary study is simply a bonus component. Also, it is convenient to build your vocabulary while reading a great book because to have your child sit with a dictionary beside them to look up words they may not fully know interrupts the story line, but this allows them to get the exact definition on the spot rather than having them use only context to determine the definition.

It's our first Score-Raising Classic

The first SAT Score-Raising Classic we bought but if it goes well, we will buy more. Contrary to some of the reviews of other score-raising classics, this DOES have bolded words, so it's easy to find the SAT words in context and the glossary for each is right there. Hopefully, this will help make SAT studying fun and we'll get others. It's reading a class and getting more out of it at the same time.

Picturebooks explained

More things happen in picture books than meets the eye. The placement on the page, use of whitespace, and picture colorings have more to do with what the child perceives than we realize. Stereotypes and fears can be learned through the pictures. Excellent book for educators wanting to know more about the power of imagery and how imagery influences what children learn about their world.

the book was delivered promptly however the downside was that the book was copied in the opposite direction... similar to a book printed in Japan.
