Jeffers discusses the crippling effects of fear in her personal life and explains how she formulated a course of action for conquering it. Her answers are simple, her course of action difficult only because it requires courage. She explains how fear is based on the uncertainty of change and the lack of positive self image. She avoids psychological lingo, and includes many case studies about careers and changes in personal life both of which are beginning to cause anxiety in many teens. Her message is reassuring: choices are not opportunities to make mistakes, but valid paths to growth, whichever path we take. She addresses the fundamental cause of fear the belief that ``I can't handle it!'' Feel the Fear is an important book, for while some young people are more crippled by insecurity that others, many do believe that the path to adulthood is fraught with dangers. Based on a course taught at the New School for Social Research, this book offers readers a clear-cut plan for action that, when followed, should help them unlearn their misconceptions about of fear and replace them with attitudes of strength and conviction. By mixing positive thinking with situational exercises that examine basic fear responses, psychologist Jeffers shows that fear is what you make of it and that in most cases it is unfounded. She also illustrates key points through examining case studies, which show that when we are fearful, faulty thinking is most often the real culprit; when such thinking is corrected, the fear is gone. This book by no means offers a quick, fix-it course, as the author encourages return visits to the text when situations call for it. Recommended for general self-help collections. Love this book

It's bizarre that so many one star reviews all sound as if they are written by exactly the same person...all appear at the top...and they all more or less have the same datesm, especially 4/27/09. Something very suspicious there. Seems like a smear campaign. Despite that, this book still maintains a good rating...because it is great.

I've had this book for probably 20 years or so and every couple of years I cart it out and reread it. It's been one of several wonderful tools I've used to get me through times of indecision and anxiety. It's a really, really simple book and that's part of the beauty of it. By being able to alter my perspective, things have turned out wonderfully in my life...and even when hard things have happened, I've been able to see my way through to the good again, which I hadn't been able to do prior to committing these tenets to memory. I went from full blown panic attack disorder to not a panic attack in sight, for years, and a big part of it was committing to these tenets. Highly recommended.

Ok we all have fears and for the longest time mine has been that I will run out of time and won't be able to accomplish the goals I have for myself in the sport I do due to limitations that age brings when it comes to sports.We all know that professionally in some sports we are very limited in time to stay in top shape on high level trough you whole life .So I didn't want to slow down ,didn't want to do a vacation because I was afraid that If I fail in the future I will blame it on the time off I took until I came to a realization that there is such thing as stoping productivity when not recharging your batteries .
The picture bellow is from our vacation with my girlfriend. I took couple of books with me and it just happens one of them to be "Feel the fear and do it anyway".For a long time I was trying and approaching my fears in different ways but this book finally gave me some guidelines in to how to deal with it .In sport we always set up goals and with new goals new fears come and new comfort zones need to be conquered.I am really grateful to have the chance to read such an amazing literature .Thanks to the author Susan Jeffers .
One last thing I want to share is an experience I had while hiking the "Gross Piton" in St.Lucia (the one from the picture).We were talking with our guide and asking questions about the history of the island and the story he shared with us really struck me .He said that when the spaniards came here first they couldn't take over the island because the local Indians were fighting very fearless. I ask him but how come they had guns and the locals were using sticks pretty much .And his answer was what shocked me .He said they didn't fear the guns because they didn't recognize them as a threat because they didn't know what guns are and jumped straight in front of them and fought . It's crazy how sometimes we make such a scary picture out of things because we anticipate the worse case scenario.What if only we didn't know what to expect and go back to that curious stage when we were curious kids and just jumped in front of the new challenges fearless ?

How to bury the lead in an otherwise hopeful book

This won't be a popular review because it will go against the flood of praises. Actually, I wanted to like this book. I came to it with very high hopes only to be greatly disappointed and even somewhat irritated. Despite its enormous popularity, I have difficulty recommending this book because it buries one of its main agendas in the later chapters, and that agenda undercuts the value of the whole.

I intend no negative comments against the author, and certainly, the 12 chapters have useful information. I especially liked the Pain to Power chart concept in chapter 3, and there are other useful things as well, especially in the first 7 or 8 chapters.

However, starting on page 154 (chapter 9) the book begins a gradual descent into a hazy cave of vagueness in which metaphysics, the universe, fate, life, intuition, the Laws of Universal Energy, and other such things emerge as if living entities. Actually, a good summary of the book's solution to fear is this: "With the Law of Universal Energy on your side, you can learn to trust not only the universe, but yourself." (p. 196) Further, the author states outright a goal to "whet your appetite, so you will be eager to learn more. I urge you to look at the laws of the universe as postulated by metaphysicians." Instead of hiding this on p. 204, this statement should have been on p 1.

If you're into all the metaphysical stuff, you'll probably love this book. If you're not, you might have trouble with it, like I did. When I started the book, I was eager to learn. By the end, reading statements like the following, I was eager to get to another book:

"The way I use the word [spiritual] will be acceptable to you whether you are religious or an atheist" (p 191). Also, "For those of you who are religious and/or believe in God, you will see how these ideas can be incorporated in your beliefs. And, as I said, earlier, if you don't believe in God, these laws apply as well" (p 205).

At best, these statements show a bit of naiveté; at worst, they are an attack on one's intelligence. The word "spiritual" is defined as little different from "emotional," and the attempt to be all things to all people by essentially claiming that whether one is an atheist or a theist of some sort will be irrelevant to "the Law of Universal Energy" is not only annoying, it is almost incomprehensible.

Had I known the last 4 chapters were going to ground all of the "get over your fears" in the metaphysical stuff, I would not have bought or read the book. It seemed to me a back-handed way to drag people into dubious philosophy. For me, it's a deal-killer.

Where is Tom Clancy when we need him?

I've seen this book compared to Clancy's "Red Storm Rising". Nothing could be further from the truth. Red Storm Rising was, to me, a masterpiece. Characters with depth, detailed & intricate plot, thoughtful strategic rationale and artful use of people being unexpectedly creative or making mistakes.

Ghost Fleet seemed to be a channel for everything going on in the world today that scares or concerns the author. The US military is thoroughly incompetent. The Navy has been reduced to a shallow shell of its formal self populated with clueless, arrogant, irreverant youngsters. Meanwhile the Chinese are geniuses. Masters of strategy and emerging technology. That is right up until the US is geniuses and the Chinese are arrogant clods. Ultimately the world can only be saved by grizzled old veterans. The characters are wooden and in many cases ridiculous. There were some characters and scenes that, for the life of me, I still can't figure out why they were in the story.

I finished Ghost Fleet only because I'm tenacious. You should avoid it. It barely rises to the level of a good beach read.

Neither a good novel nor a good look at the future of warfare

This book has been on several recommended reading lists for the military, and specifically the military space community. I wonder, after reading it, if those who recommended it got beyond the first chapter. I would describe the book as basically a survey of a number of possible future technological innovations (tracking nuclear reactors based on radioactive emissions, rail guns, space based laser and defenses, autonomous vehicles, etc.) loosely tied together with a very weak plot. The military details are, well, not very detailed (nowhere near the level of Tom Clancy). The overall flow of the war strains credibility (with the advantage of a few of these technological innovations, China easily defeats the United States, and takes over Hawaii). The subplots are confusing, and they also add very little to the overall plotline. I was expecting something akin to The Third World War, by General Sir John Hackett. This book is nowhere near that level of detail.
If you're looking for a description of future warfare and what it could look like, go elsewhere (7 Deadly Scenarios is a good start). If you're looking for a good military novel there are hundreds to choose from. This book tries to be a bit of both and fails on both counts.

Like the mediocre stuff Clancy was putting out after he made it big...

Meh. This reads like the mediocre stuff Clancy was putting out after he made it big. Details are fudged with "new technology" covering plot/logic gaps. There is essentially no characterization. All Americans are loyal, tough, good, smart and self-sacrificing. The bad guys (Chinese) are all sadistic and evil. The limited backstory for a main character is a cardboard father-son conflict. The old ways are the best ways-- if only the entire military were run by retired Navy Chiefs! Even the war scenes are, well, dull. There are some interesting observations on an over-reliance on technology, but in the end it devolves to those same miracle hackers you see in every techno-story that can do anything and break into any system with a series of keystrokes. Sorry, I was bored by the end.

First rate. Insightful. Much enjoyed the dialogue format, letting RB speak for himself. The Parr contribution was most interesting and informed and his subject lends itself well to F1. I wonder what RB's role will be in F1's future? It needs him. I was gripped. At last, that's how RB does what he does so sublimely. A book with high levels of aerodynamic and mechanical grip. A must read not just for fans but I can think of a number of managers who could glean some tips from RB's way of doing things.

As an avid motorsports fan with a very keen interest in Ross Brawn's methods, I enjoyed the compilation of anecdotes and assertions from the big man himself. I did find myself skipping over all of the Art of War-inspired analyses written by Adam Parr though. They seemed so dry and dour compared to the informative light-hearted banter that fills the rest of this book.

Fun read about a clever boy and his awesome Language Arts teacher.

This was recommended to me by a really bright eleven year-old South Korean girl who is excelling at mastering English as her second language. How could I not check it out when she was so excited to tell me about it?

I liked Nick because he is so smart and creative. I loved Miss Granger because she is a great teacher, the kind who really is passionate about her job and puts in the time and effort to make sure the kids learn the most they can as her students. I loved the focus on words and the emphasis on how important they are - I, too, love dictionaries and encyclopedias! Also, the references to chess and battles were clever.

The aspect of the story I enjoyed least was when tv coverage and national media coverage became a part of it all. That happens all the time over any little thing, things go viral, things become memes one day and are forgotten the next, people become famous all too easily for very little reason or substance at all, so I wanted to move beyond that very quickly.

Overall, it was an interesting and fun read and I can't wait to chat to Minju about it in more detail when I see her next!

nick allen is not an ordinary kid. he is not a troublemaker, but i wouldn't say he's the most innocent kid. so one day, nick comes up with a brilliant idea. make up a new word! so as he's walking home from school, his friend Janet drops her pen, and nick says, Janet, you dropped your... frindle. and suddenly, everything changes for him. he's not the normal kid he used to be. when he walks into the penny pantry store, he can't be unnoticed. at least one person would say, hey nick- i love your new word- frindle. but there is one person who doesn't seem to like his word- mrs. granger, a.k.a. the lone granger. mrs. granger isn't just an ordinary english teacher- she's a fierce one. nick makes millions of dollars on his frindle trademark with Bud Lawrence, and things turn out great for him. and it turns out-mrs. granger was rooting for him the whole time.

She almost got me!

My 9 year old daughter came home with an idea that if she would invent a word and have everyone to like it, she would become rich, just as a 5th grader did. I haven't hear of the story before and she wanted me to buy the idea of creating a new word, spreading it out, get rich and release her form the burden of school. I thought she was talking about a real character at her school. And I almost buy it until I begin to search on the internet about Nick Allen and the word friendle. Nothing was real. However I bought my kids the book and ended up reading it myself. The story is very creative, hilarious and at some points it made me cry, especially because it made me remember those wonderful years of my school life, the influence of great teachers, the friends I don't see much and so many other great memories.

Only the most basic of techniques

I have yet to find a decent book on nunchaku and this book is no exception. It covers only the most basic of techniques and that is my main issue with this book. What it covers is covered very well with good explanations and clear pictures but nowhere does this book indicate that it is only an introductory text to nunchaku. There is a follow-up to this book called advanced nunchaku which I haven't read but I believe that this is also fairly basic. I believe that this is a hole in martial arts texts that is waiting to be filled as people have always held an interest in the nunchaku due to their flashy nature - the problem is most people aren't particularly good at using them and they are dismissed as being a weapon for show with little practical application.

I've given this book 3 stars because it is the best book of its type out there that I have seen on nunchaku. Ultimately though it suffers from the same issue that all books on nunchaku suffer from - it is far from complete. As such it can only be recommended to the absolute beginner - someone who has never picked up a nunchaku before.

Maple-Roasted Carrot Salad Recipe

   • 2 pounds carrots, preferably with leafy tops
   • Good olive oil
   • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
   • ¼ cup pure Grade A maple syrup
   • 2/3 cup dried cranberries
   • 2/3 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (2 oranges)
   • 3 tablespoons sherry wine vinegar
   • 2 garlic cloves, grated on a Microplane
   • 6 ounces baby arugula
   • 6 ounces goat cheese, such as Montrachet, medium-diced
   • 2/3 cup roasted, salted Marcona almonds

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees.

Trim and scrub the carrots. If the carrots are more than 1 inch in diameter, cut them in half lengthwise. Cut the carrots in large diagonal slices 1 inch wide × 2 inches long (they will shrink when they roast) and place in a medium bowl with ¼ cup of olive oil, 1 teaspoon salt, and ½ teaspoon pepper. Toss well and transfer to two sheet pans. (If you use just one, they’ll steam instead of roasting.) Roast for 20 minutes, tossing once, until the carrots are tender. Transfer all the carrots to one of the sheet pans, add the maple syrup, toss, and roast for 10 to 15 minutes, until the edges are caramelized. Watch them carefully! Toss with a metal spatula and set aside for 10 minutes.

Meanwhile, combine the cranberries and orange juice in a small saucepan, bring to a simmer, then set aside for 10 minutes.

In a small bowl, combine the vinegar, garlic, and ½ teaspoon salt. Whisk in 3 tablespoons of olive oil. Place the arugula in a large bowl and add the carrots, cranberries (with their liquid), goat cheese, almonds, and the vinaigrette. Toss with large spoons, sprinkle with salt, and serve at room temperature.

Not exactly what I was expecting regarding Jeffrey, but so far the recipes have been worth it.

I've had such consistently good results making Ina Garten's recipes that I would have felt remiss had I not added this newest cookbook to my collection. While I mostly like it, I have to say that I am a little disappointed in a couple of ways.

But first, the good part - the verdict on the recipes I've tried so far:
--- Lentils & Kielbasa Salad - I loved this, but, although he liked it, my husband didn't think it was particularly noteworthy. I liked the idea of cooking the lentils with a whole turnip and clove-studded onion thrown in and thought that it would deliver a flavor punch that I hadn't tried before, but for my money (and time), I think Alice Waters's Lentil Salad from The Art of Simple Food: Notes, Lessons, and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution packs just as much flavor with less than half the work. These lentils, with those flavors, along with the heavily mustarded vinaigrette, worked really nicely with the kielbasa and were delicious. I will likely make this again, but Alice's remain at the top of my lentil recipe list.
--- Maple-Roasted Carrot Salad - We LOVED this salad. So perfect for fall. Although Ina suggests it for lunch or a side, we found that it made a satisfying light supper with a glass of crisp, white wine. My son, who also had it, loved how flavorful it was and even asked me if he could have the recipe! Although the recipe instructs that everything be tossed together, I would have preferred leaving the goat cheese and almonds to be scattered over the top of the tossed vegetables.
--- Spaghetti Squash with Garlic and Parmesan - This is the recipe to try if you're not sure how to make spaghetti squash. It is similar to Sara Foster's delicious recipe from Fresh Every Day: More Great Recipes from Foster's Market, which is made with balsamic vinegar and without garlic. The addition of garlic is a good one. Freshly-grating the Parm is a must. This is yummy.
--- French 75 - a standard recipe for this cocktail, but messing with it would make it something other than a French 75, wouldn't it? I'm so glad she included this, though. It's a lovely cocktail that's not seen often enough.

What disappointed me about the book was that I didn't feel as though the theme - cooking for Jeffrey - was realized in the way I was expecting. Although some of the recipe descriptions say "Jeffrey likes this" or "Jeffrey and I had this when...", Jeffrey's favorite recipes appear at the back of the book as a list of dishes, the recipes for which are in Ina's other cookbooks!
What?
I thought that's what this cookbook was supposed to be!

In addition, there are a lot of recipes that seem to be little more than variations on recipes from earlier books.
As usual, desserts take up the lion's share of pages, but as much as I like to complain about that, desserts from Ina's earlier books (coconut cupcakes, those brownies!) have easily been among the best I've ever made.

Bottom line:
There are good recipes here. The first few I tried assured that I will be delving further into these recipes.
I'm not sorry I bought this book, but I do have to say that it was not exactly what I was expecting.

Does Not Disappoint

I purchased three cookbooks over the last several weeks and the only one I felt worth the money is this one. There are many recipes that I will be using. I am actually cooking the brisket tonight for company. I have several other of Ina Garten's cookbooks and this is an excellent addition to my collection.

A little too edited - there aren't very many recipes in this book. It is beautifully photographed and I appreciate the photos. I suppose if you want a selection of go to recipes this could do if you like the selections. There just aren't many alternatives to what is presented here so you kind of get what she gives you and no more. I'll use it but it's one of those that will be given as a donation to the library sale next year I think.

Great Writer

I could only give it a four though because it seems to be directed specifically at black young men and that is a shame...it should be for EVERY young man to read. The reason I say this was I am in college to learn to teach art k. - 12 and as a white person I was given the task of acquainting myself with black culture so i could teach black children, per them, more effectively. I have a young son and 4 brothers, all white, and I can tell you that this is the same advice any color man would give to any color child. I also have cousins who are mixed. OUTSTANDING BOOK. ...and I hope the marketing changes to emphasis our similarities, not our differences. ...I am just speaking to the marketing because Mr. Harper presents men and women of all colors for young people to emulate, including John Kennedy...my black uncle was with Robert Kennedy the night before he died. Mr. Harper your book is just great.

I have read this book, and I personally wish I had the book when i was growing up. This is the type of gudie that would lead a young man to a better path. Too many of young men of color are in trouble and labeled as troublemakers. Here is a guide that a father,uncle or mentor could use to help a young man to develop. The 100 Black Men service organization has a affirmation

After re-reading the book, I have purchased the paperback and I'm sending it to my nephew. To Manifest his destiny, I believe thsi book will be intrumental in helping him reach his goal of going to college this year. I also believe if any of my other nephews read the book it will help them along with thier destinies as well. Once again I recomend this book for any father trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow or uncle, big brother or father figure

forget the title

Forget about the title. Harper has crafted a fabulous book that will appeal to nearly all teens -- not just at-risk African-American boys. While the book speaks directly to African-American males, its smart yet cool approach to the problems that plague all teens, but particularly young people who are poor or members of a minority group, will also be a hit with girls and members of other beleaguered minority groups, as well. The language is laden with slang but intelligent, and both Harper and his extremely phat friends will make inroads where even caring teachers and parents might not. The book could easily have become sappy, but it never does.

Harper's inclusion of his celebrity friends and of full-color photographs of him partying with them might provoke some teen to read the book who might not at first been inclined to do so. It was another spot-on move by Harper. I am really grateful to him for providing young people with such a frank blueprint for growth.

Students who might be Caucasian and affluent will still love the book's message that everyone -- even handsome, successful TV stars -- sometimes feel lonely, have trouble approaching members of the opposite sex, and make mistakes.

What about straight-A students bound for Yale? They will be attracted to Harper, who graduated from Harvard Law School cum laude. The school's jocks will love that Harper was a college football hero. For the free spirits out there, Harper begins each chapter with a pithy quote from sources as disparate as the Persian poet Rumi, former President Bill Clinton, and rapper Andre 3000 (nee André Benjamin). Harper really has a hook for most of the cliques in American high schools.

great figures

Wow this is dense. I am using this book to study during my allergy and immunology fellowship. It is exceedingly dense for my purposes, and the authors sometimes go off on what I consider to be unnecessary tangents. However, the figures are excellent and its saving grace. Overall, I am pleased with this book. It is a nice reference.

This IS the book for understanding Immunology, there's no better book for that task, the layout is just plain incredible and very easy to read, even for those whose main lenguage is not english. Every student should give it a read. It is that good.
